Dining at Voyager Estate is a truly unique experience. The beautiful European gardens, Cape Dutch style architecture and sweeping vineyards combined with Voyager’s renowned Discovery Menu make an adventure to one of Margaret River’s most celebrated wineries all the more enticing.
Known primarily for their range of award-winning wines, the Wright family has overseen the vineyards on their Stevens Valley property since 1978. With a family history that is underpinned by 150 years of farming, Voyager Estate founder, Michael Wright, selected the current sites of the five vineyards for their ideal grape growing characteristics. The result is a distinctive profile that is present in each wine created under the Voyager Estate name.
As it does at so many winery restaurants, wine comes first at Voyager Estate. However, the Discovery Menus is what brings food and wine together. Uniting the skills of Head Chef, Santiago Fernandez, and Sommelier, Claire Tonon, the restaurant has been designed in a way that allows for guests to experience Voyager Estate at its very best.
Santiago is a more recent addition to the Voyager Estate team, though he has had no trouble fitting in. Prior to heading the kitchen at the Margaret River winery, the Spanish-born chef worked all over the world in Michelin star establishments, as well as in Australia at Daylesford’s Sault. At Voyager Estate, his menu is shaped by the season and what is available to him from the kitchen garden. He has continued the much-loved tradition of the Discovery Menu, which guests can enjoy as part of either a seven or four-course experience. With the wine remaining at the forefront of Voyager Estate’s focus, each dish is created with a specific wine in mind and is, of course, served alongside a Voyager Estate wine.
Making the most of the acres that surround the restaurant, the Voyager Estate team planted an extensive kitchen garden in 2014. A source of inspiration for many of Santiago’s dishes, the kitchen garden at peak season has the potential to supply up to 90% of the Discovery Menu’s produce.
It may be housed in a colossal white mansion but the restaurant itself is quaint and cosy. Holding true to the design of the buildings and gardens that fill the estate property, the dining room follows the elegant Cape Dutch design. The warm dining room is filled with ornate, dark wooden tables lit by impressive candelabras, and a large open fireplace takes pride of place in the centre of the room.
Looking to the future, Voyager Estate is dedicated to becoming a wholly sustainable enterprise, eager to achieve environmental balance across all aspects of the winery, restaurant and gardens included. An establishment that is steeped in history, this winery combines the old and the new, in both its wine and food, to craft an experience that is entirely unique to Voyager Estate.
