While many winery restaurants take their cue from their wine to pair with items on their menu, Cullen Estate has looked beyond this to focus on dishes made from only organic, biodynamic or sustainable produce.
The Cullen name is known most notably for being one of the founding families of the Australian wine industry, and most notably the Margaret River region. The iconic vineyard is located in the beautiful town of Wilyabrup and has been owned by the Cullen family since long before grapes were grown there. It was one of the first wineries in the region to start growing grapes back in the 1960s and, today, their biodynamic and organic certified wines can be enjoyed on the outdoor terrace flanked by rows of vineyards. While their first food offerings may have begun with simple cheese platters, today their focus has expanded to incorporate their philosophy – sustainable, organic and/or biodynamic produce only.
Managing Director, Vanya Cullen, has transformed her family’s property to be one of Australia’s most sought-after boutique wine producers. She has a keen interest in biodynamic practices and the restaurant and winery have come to reflect this. The estate boasts an on-site biodynamic garden that is filled with an abundance of herbs, fruits, vegetables and native plants, all of which feature extensively on the seasonal lunch menu.
Heading the kitchen, Executive Chef, Iain Robertson, has had 17 years’ experience up his sleeve, including a long stint at nearby Xanadu Wines, before joining the Cullen family in 2016. He is deeply passionate about the Margaret River region, takes much of his inspiration for his food from the sea and, of course, the impressive on-site garden. He has embraced the biodynamic philosophy whole-heartedly and has come to rely solely on locally grown produce and sustainably-farmed protein to craft his menus.
For those who are eager to take their dining experience to the next level, the restaurant also offers an intimate Food and Wine Experience. Enjoy Iain’s delicious food in a refined set menu that is matched with a range of exclusive Cullen wines, both new release and popular back vintage. Each dish showcases the plethora of amazing ingredients grown in the biodynamic garden, as well as others that have been sourced from the beautiful surrounding Margaret River area. This experience is just as educational as it is delicious, and the staff will talk you through the winemaking processes used at Cullen Wines as well as their unique approach to viticulture and everything that makes Cullen so special.
The Cullen Wines Restaurant and Cellar Door are snuggled amongst the grapevines, overlooking the entire vineyard in a beautiful granite and timber building.
