When wandering through Perth’s CBD, you will find plenty of evidence that the city’s rich history is well preserved. Petition – comprising the Kitchen restaurant, Wine Bar and Merchant, and a Beer Corner – is located in the State Building and derives its name from nineteenth-century petitioners who gathered in the centre of Perth to lobby for their rights and common beliefs.
Each of the venue’s three elements maintains an aspect of their heritage, however careful renovation and restoration has produced a more modern and sophisticated design. The sleek, steel-plated interiors are juxtaposed with industrial-style exposed brickwork, making for an engaging interior and, together, set the stage for a thoughtful culinary experience. Every visit is put to music by international label owner and musician, Ewan Jansen, who has curated a playlist to encapsulate Petition’s unique vibe.
Head Chef, Jesse Blake, is a New Zealand born foodie with a passion for top-notch fare and seasonal ingredients. Armed with the knowledge gained in the kitchens of Hamilton’s Zinc Food and Wine, and Melbourne’s Cumulus Inc., Jesse has firmly established himself at Petition.
When it comes to the Kitchen, Jesse’s menu takes inspiration from his childhood memories. His minimalist approach makes for a simple, clean-cut, bistro-style offering that showcases local produce and only the freshest ingredients. The Kitchen is supplied by Western Australian producers as well as a helping hand from overseas to ensure the utmost quality of every pantry item. Between juices from The Juicist, Freemantle sardines, organic Blackwood Valley beef from Margaret River and bread from Abhi’s Bakery, the possibilities for delicious menu items are endless. The menu features sharing dishes such as Freemantle Octopus with tomato escabeche and taramasalata; Torched Salmon Fillet with burnt onion broth, oyster mushroom and green onion aioli; and a selection of artisanal sweet treats to tie it all together.
The Beer Corner champions 18 rotating independent beer taps that showcase over 2,000 Australian breweries. With an emphasis on Western Australian brews as well as others from across the globe, the Petition Beer Corner can also set you up with take-aways. Stock up before you leave and you won’t have to miss out on a rotating brew if you can’t stick around.
If you hanker for a top-shelf drop of wine, head to the Petition Wine Bar and Merchant. This sophisticated city wine bar is a sleek and polished space with an extensive list of boutique wines and a team with inimitable knowledge. Here, you’ll have your choice from both a diverse array of wines and flavoursome and dramatic spirits and cocktails.
A meeting place for all, whether it be business in the Wine Bar, a long family lunch in the Kitchen, or a gathering of old friends in the Beer Corner, there’s a place, a drink and an experience awaiting anyone who enters Petition’s doors.
