Tamar Ridge is one of the wineries in the region that benefits from a river that feeds the fertile soil, which in turn, produces some of Tasmania’s best wine.
From the first vineyard planting in 1994, it has built a reputation for creating cellar-worthy, cool-climate wines that demonstrate the very spirit of the state. All of the winemaking action occurs in the heart of pinot noir country, across a number of vineyards within the Tamar Valley. Kayena is the main grape-growing site and the home base for Head Winemaker, Tom Wallace.
A Kiwi by birth, Tom studied oenology and completed a few vintages in New Zealand, before venturing across the Tasman to ply his trade in Australia, the United States and France. He brings all of this cool-climate experience to Tamar Ridge, where he grows and produces pinot noir, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, pinot gris and riesling.
These grapes are then transformed into wines that fall under two labels: premium dry table wines under Tamar Ridge, and classic-style sparkling wines under Pirie Tasmania. Tamar Ridge has built up an outstanding reputation for being a pioneer of Tasmanian pinot noir, with drops like the Single Block Pinot Noir. Every harvest or so, a select block of premium pinot grapes are chosen to make this unique wine, allowing a true showcasing of the block’s attributes.
Similarly, Pirie is one of the most established names when it comes to Tasmanian sparkling. In fact, the 1995 vintage at Pirie helped put the state’s sparkling scene on the map – a reputation it has helped to maintain ever since with the Pirie NV. This, along with the full range, can be sampled at Tamar Ridge Cellar Door, located just a 20-minute drive from Launceston in Rosevears.
Upon entering the property, expect your senses to be overloaded. There are vines as far as the eye can see, paired with panoramic views over the Tamar River. The building, updated in 2013, is built for enjoying the best the area has to offer with a long bar for tastings as well as lots of space to sit back, relax and enjoy the surroundings.
The winery’s flagship wine is the 2014 Reserve Pinot Noir. Deep crimson in colour with a rich and complex nose, it has strong aromas of ripe raspberries and strawberries that dominate against a background of spicy oak and some savoury characteristics. In true Tamar Ridge style it drinks well now, but with some careful cellaring will also develop more complex and savoury characteristics. Whatever your preferred style, the staff will informatively guide you through the wines, as well as give you the opportunity to taste and buy aged vintages of pinot noir that are available exclusively at the Cellar Door.
The quality-first approach to winemaking also applies to the food offering. The team at Tamar Ridge has partnered with acclaimed chefs, Hubert & Dan, to offer platters of locally sourced cheeses, charcuterie and house-cured salmon, highlighting the seasonal produce of both the Tamar Valley and greater Tasmania. The Cellar Door also hosts private events, for which the kitchen is able to tailor a modern and elegant French-inspired menu.
There’s nothing more Tasmanian than the Tamar. Tamar Ridge is an expression of this connection, producing elegant and structured wines that encapsulate the terroir beautifully.
