At the foot of the Tamar Valley lies one of the region’s oldest vineyards. For more than 30 years, the family owned and operated winery, Sharmans Wines, has produced exceptional, boutique Tasmanian wines with flair and style.
The vineyard was established and planted by Mike and Phillipa Sharman in the 1980s. For more than two decades Mike and Phillipa worked to cement Sharmans Wines’ reputation for premium quality and unique regional wines. In 2012 the couple sold the business to husband and wife duo, Ian and Melissa Murrell.
Ian and Melissa are committed to continuing Sharmans Wines’ standing as one of the most experienced vineyards in the valley. While not from wine-related backgrounds (Ian is an ophthalmologist by trade and Melissa a nurse), the pair is incredibly passionate about fine food and wine.
The couple’s acquisition of the property has seen the addition of a stunning cellar door in recent years. Melissa’s keen eye for design and flair for creative detail have seen her lovingly convert the original home into a modern, lightfilled space where visitors can gather to sample exceptional Tasmanian wine and produce. Naturally, Sharmans’ wines take centre stage.
Sharmans’ range includes a pinot noir, chardonnay, riesling, pinot gris, merlot and shiraz, among others. These full-bodied wines are produced using top quality grapes from a vineyard on the banks of the North Esk River. Natural products, including pest control, are used wherever possible to ensure nothing upsets the delicate soil composition.
The unique location of Sharmans vineyard makes it one of the earliest ripening sites in the region. Once the grapes are ripe, they are sent to neighbouring winery, Josef Chromy, where Head Winemaker, Jeremy Dineen, produces Sharmans’ selection. Working closely with Ian and Melissa, Jeremy ensures each wine he creates in the Sharman style captures the distinct flavours and textures of the vineyard.
The final product is then returned to the property where it is available to taste and purchase at the Cellar Door. Only a short drive from Launceston, the Cellar Door is easily accessible and makes an excellent day trip for locals and visitors.
On your arrival, sample the flagship 2013 Pinot Noir, a light to medium drop with intense notes of dark cherry and plum.
If something fizzy is more to your taste, try the signature sparkling variety, a half and half blend of pinot noir and chardonnay with green apple, melon and stone fruit complexities.
The beautiful grounds at Sharmans Wines play host to events during both the summer and winter months. Live music, food trucks, Easter egg hunts, dinners, weddings and corporate events can all be found on the property at different times throughout the year.
Sharmans Wines is deserving of its reputation as a leading Tasmanian wine producer. From rich and full-bodied pinot noirs to textural whites and lively sparkling wines, Sharmans Wines has continued to produce exceptional wines for more than three decades.
