Pooley Belmont Vineyard

Over three generations, Pooley Wines has planted and operated two historic vineyards in the Coal River Valley with a singular ethos front of mind: environmentally sustainable viticulture that strives for perfection. With a five red-star rating courtesy of James Halliday, it ranks high on the list for any wine lover.
Sitting in the heart of Coal River Valley, the winery has been producing multiaward winning wines since 1985. Husband-and-wife team Denis and Margaret Pooley originally established the Cooinda Vale property to enjoy in their retirement, planting a small block of riesling and pinot noir. The early planting showed promise and a gradual expansion of plantings ensued over the following 15 years with chardonnay, pinot noir, riesling, pinot grigio, cabernet, merlot and syrah all appearing.
In 2003 Denis and Margaret’s son, John, and his wife Libby, purchased a heritagelisted Georgian sandstone property, located on the doorstep of historic Richmond village. They planted a block of pinot noir at nearby Butchers Hill and converted it into a second Pooley Wines vineyard. The Cellar Door operates from the old coach house, showcasing the family’s passion for fine wine production. Until Margaret’s passing in 2010, three generations worked the same vines. These days, Margaret’s grandchildren, Matthew and Anna, take on the roles of Viticulturalist and Head Winemaker respectively, working across both vineyards to ensure the quality of the wines under the Pooley label remains as high as possible.
Both Matthew and Anna come to their roles with decades of experience behind them. Having studied winemaking at the University of Adelaide, Anna completed vintages at South Australian wineries, Tatachilla and Wolf Blass, before venturing overseas to work in Europe. When Anna returned to Tasmania, she made wines under the Heemskerk and Abel’s Tempest labels, before rejoining the family at Pooley Wines.
Matthew is similarly successful in the industry. After studying agriculture in Geelong, he returned to the family farm to help expand his grandfather’s vineyard. A Nuffield scholar, Matthew has worked tirelessly to establish Pooley Wines’ sustainability initiatives, and as a result the vineyard became the first fully accredited environmentally sustainable vineyard in Tasmania.
The Pooley Wines’ range spans from riesling to cabernet sauvignon, with pinot noir, chardonnay and syrah in the middle. A number of wines have collected awards over the years – most recently the 2015 Margaret Pooley Tribute Riesling collected four trophies at wine shows across the state, while the 2016 Pooley Riesling won the trophy for Best Riesling in class at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show.
However, the Family Reserve Pinot Noir continues to be the family’s flagship. The 2014 vintage is a smooth and silky wine, with an elegant and textural finish that’s become a hallmark of the oldest vines from Cooinda Vale.
Once you’ve tasted the wines, settle in for an afternoon of leisure. A woodfired oven is fired up on weekends in summer to produce delicious pizzas, best enjoyed with a local cheese platter. Games and entertainment also mean the whole family will be amused.
With the drivers of passion, family and a desire for perfection, Pooley Wines is putting its best foot forward. From the humble origins of a husband and wife’s vineyard to award-winning wine producers, it continues to impress.
