The essence of Tasmania is found in every bottle of Pipers Brook Vineyard wine. One of the pioneers of the state’s modern wine industry, Pipers Brook unites a cool-climate and unique geography to produce award-winning drops that carry all the markers of its exceptional terroir.
Established in 1974, Pipers Brook Vineyard has been producing wines for more than 40 years from its position in the heart of northern Tasmania. It’s one of many vineyards under the family of Kreglinger Wine Estates, joining Kreglinger Vintage Sparkling, Ninth Island, Rochecombe, Norfolk Rise and 9 Rainwater.
As with any family, the responsibilities are shared. The grapes for Pipers Brook’s wines are grown across seven nearby vineyards and then transported to the winery to be processed and transformed into sensational wines.
The Pipers Brook area is particularly famous for producing world-renowned sparkling wines, chardonnay, aromatic whites and pinot noir, encouraged by the volcanic soil and cool maritime climate. Because of these conditions, the team at Pipers Brook is able to grow these varieties as well as pinot gris, riesling, pinot meunier and the lesser known gewürztraminer.
Luke Whittle and Natalie Fryer are the team behind the scenes, occupying the roles of Senior Winemaker and Sparkling Winemaker respectively. Originally from New Zealand, Luke started work on several vintages in his home country, before making the move across the Tasman Sea. He took on a position in central Victoria, before heading overseas to ply his trade in Germany and Canada. He returned to Tasmania in 2015 and was appointed Senior Winemaker at Pipers Brook in 2016.
Working alongside Luke, Natalie is in charge all of the Kreglinger sparkling brands, imparting her knowledge and expertise into each bottle. You can taste all of the team’s hard work at the Pipers Brook Cellar Door, where the full range, as well as those from Kreglinger, Ninth Island and Rochecombe, is on show.
In keeping with Tasmania’s reputation for exceptional pinot noir, the Pipers Brook Estate Pinot Noir is a continual crowd-pleaser, pairing well with flavours like smoked quail and Mediterranean-style dishes.
