Holm Oak Vineyards sits in Tasmania’s Tamar Valley, among the oak trees that inspired its name.
Here, one of the state’s most dynamic winemaking teams, winemaker Rebecca Duffy and viticulturalist Tim Duffy, produce cool-climate drops that celebrate the state’s unique terroir.
Drive into this picturesque estate and take in Holm Oak’s expansive view of the region’s rolling hills, framed by majestic trees and rows of vines. Once you’ve parked, head straight for the Cellar Door, where you’ll probably be greeted by Bec or Tim. If you’re lucky, you might even spot their sons, Max and Will, feeding estate-grown apples to the General Manager, Pinot ‘d’ Pig.
Bec and Tim are proud to share their knowledge and experience with every visitor. After 18 years’ experience working in McLaren Vale, Coonawarra, Napa Valley and Western Australia, and working as a senior winemaker at Capel Vale Wines, Bec has a wealth of winemaking experience. As a third-generation grape grower and agronomist, with extensive viticultural experience, Tim proved the perfect partner in this venture, with a comprehensive knowledge of the world of grapes.
Together, the pair cultivates riesling, arneis, chardonnay, pinot gris, sauvignon blanc, pinot noir and cabernet merlot on-site. Holm Oak’s location means it boasts a moderate maritime climate, cooled by prevailing westerlies off the Southern Ocean, meaning conditions rarely venture into extremes. Its cool-climate allows the production of premium pinot noir and sparkling wines.
At the Cellar Door, Bec, Tim or one of their expert team members talk you through the wines on offer, with at least nine open for tasting at any one time. With such a large range, there’s a drop for every palate, from dry whites to full-bodied reds, and even ciders. If you’re interested in a more comprehensive tasting, you can opt for a wine flight, where the detailed nuances are on display across a curated selection of varieties.
Of particular note is The Wizard Pinot Noir, Holm Oak’s flagship wine. It features a complex and fragrant nose, with characters of dark cherry and plum fruit with spice hints and earthy notes.
Wine isn’t all that’s on offer at Holm Oak. Visitors can also enjoy a range of local cheeses, terrines and salmon products to create a platter or picnic, before venturing outdoors to an area on the property – from the secluded courtyard or the entrance lake to the new deck, there’s an ideal spot for everyone.
