Bruny Island Premium Wine
4391 Main Road, Lunawanna, Bruny Island, Tasmania
Located on the outskirts of the island settlement of Lunawanna, Bruny Island Premium Wines is an idyllic winery that celebrates its outstanding produce and beautiful surroundings. As Australia’s southernmost vineyard, it promises a unique and relaxed experience for each and every guest.
As a direct descendant of one of the first settlers on Bruny Island, Bernice Woolley is all too aware of the patch of paradise from which she operates. Bernice and her husband, Richard, bought the property in 1997, and with the help of Bernice’s father, John Dillon, they established a vineyard, planting 2,500 pinot noir and 1,500 chardonnay vines.
Since then, as Head Winemaker, Bernice has overseen 15 vintages at the winery, the last of which her son, Joseph, assisted with. A current viticulture and winemaking student in New Zealand, Joseph inherited a love for wine from his mother, planning to return to the family run business upon completing his studies. This family first approach also extends to other elements of the business – Bernice’s mother, Ruth Dillion, contributed artwork for the labels while the graphic design is the work of Bernice’s cousin, Kylie.
The winery’s close position to the D’Entrecasteaux Channel provides a maritime climate that allows the distinctive character and fruity flavours to flourish. From this unique terroir, the winemaking team produces chardonnay and pinot noir under the Bruny Island name. Bernice has employed natural viticultural techniques to limit the vines’ exposure to chemicals before harvest, which typically occurs late April to early May. The harvest is widely celebrated, with the team hosting an annual picking day for 100 people to harvest next year’s grapes, while enjoying previous vintages and local cuisine.
The end result is a nine-strong wine offering, with a specialty in chardonnay and pinot noir. The chardonnay is a cool-climate drop with a subtle texture, tannin on the finish and hints of pineapple and tropical fruit. For red drinkers, the flagship is the Reserve Pinot Noir, with the 2016 vintage featuring straight toffee flavours with mixed berry and vanilla.
This nature-first approach is also applied to the on-site Wine Bar & Grill, where fresh and local produce reign supreme. It is the only restaurant on the island that serves Bruny Island lamb and beef – as such, it goes without saying that the chargrilled Bruny Island lamb cutlets with onion chilli jam, or lamb steak with pinot cherry chutney, are unlike any other.
The winery is open year round for lunch and tastings, except Christmas Day. Dinner is also served from November until Easter on Friday and Saturday nights, and Saturday nights for the rest of the year.
Whenever you visit, Bruny Island Premium Wines is sure to delight – the family focused winery has something for everyone.
