When Marco Nikitaras married Dianna Varsimidis in 1994, he received more than a partner in life, with the union also came her parents’ grocery store, Rite-Way West Hobart. This humble store, known as the best corner store in all of Hobart, soon became the very first Hill Street Grocer and an essential part of the state’s foodie community.
In 2001, after running the business for a number of years, Marco and Dianna were joined by Marco’s brother Nick and his wife Natalia, who were seeking out a tree-change. That same year, the former Rite-Way was relaunched as the very first Hill Street Grocer. The final piece of the Nikitaras puzzle was laid in 2009 when youngest brother, Niktar and wife Georgina joined the group.
With their growing partnership, the Hill Street Grocer brand expanded. There are now nine stores across the state, with demand for fresh, gourmet food reaching every corner of Tasmania. In 2015 the brothers also brought on Steve Longmore to help manage Hill Street’s northern locations.
Walk into the newest outpost in Devonport and you’ll find yourself in a 1000-square-metre wonderland of culinary goodies. The friendly, happy vibe of the store and pride in this well-designed space shines through – it’s a big store with plenty of heart.
There’s something for everyone within its four walls: grab some salami from the deli, fresh meat from the in-house butcher and seafood from the fishmonger, before heading over to stock up on freshly baked bread and delectable pastries from Pigeon Whole Bakers.
Don’t miss a visit to the cheese counter, which houses one of Tassie’s best cheese selections. Good cheese is even better with fine wine, so head to the bottleshop to pick up a local pinot to accompany the evening’s platter. Pop by the homewares section to pick up any cooking supplies you may need or treat yourself to a bunch of fresh flowers from the in-house florist. Gourmet hampers, packed with the best Tasmanian produce, are also available to take away, or order online. If all this shopping has you needing a boost, pop into the in-house cafe – a coffee and bite to eat will have you ready to go in no time.
The real focus here is fresh produce, and Tasmania’s bounty of fruit and vegetables sits proudly on display. Hill Street works with small local suppliers and most produce comes from within the state, so it’s as fresh as possible. By sourcing directly the team is able to support the farmers that make it all possible, ensuring fair prices for both the producer and consumer.
In spreading their love for local produce far and wide, Marco, Nick and Niktar have also introduced online shopping, which operates out of their New Town store. With delivery to greater Hobart as well as some regional areas, there’s no excuse not to try Hill Street’s wares.
With such strong commitment to the region, it’s clear why Hill Street Grocer has won Tassie’s heart. With plans to introduce these chic foodie paradises to even more corners of the state, there’s no slowing down either.
