Artisan coffee, fine food and fresh local produce all converge on two locations at The Rocks and Darlinghurst, where The Fine Food Store is fast becoming a Sydney institution.
From the early days of the original store on Darling Street in Rozelle, the venue offered something different. There was a ‘walk-in’ cheese room, the deli was always stocked with a unique range of local and international produce, food tastings were offered and cooking shows broadcast.
The concept of really engaging the customer proved so successful that a move to larger and higher profile premises in The Rocks was inevitable in 2005. There, the continued focus on world class, unique food and beverage products grew the reputation of the business, with a second venue opening on the corner of Crown and Oxford Street in Darlinghurst. As a ‘one-stop business’ for food and beverage connoisseurs, The Fine Food Store offers a retail section with gifts, hampers and gourmet foods to take home; a barbeque operates out of The Rocks Markets; and there are the cafés which showcase old-fashioned values and service, with the authentic food and beverages to match.
The menu boasts a huge range of local produce, changing regularly to reflect the seasons. To name a few local products in the kitchen, PepeSaya artisan cultured butter sits alongside Country Valley milk from Picton; honey comes from Urban Beehive; macadamias from Lismore; Milawa blue cheese from Gippsland; Berkshire pork from northern New South Wales, and the original Belgium Waffles are also handmade locally.
The Bagel Gravlax with house cured salmon, smashed herb eggs, baby spinach and salsa verde is considered one of the lunch or brunch specialties, alongside an array of paninis, toasties and wraps; that’s not to forget the mouthwatering waffles and creations such as Brioche Toast with honeycomb butter, caramelized banana, field strawberries and local macadamia. For something to warm up a winter’s day try the rustic Home-style Lasagna or homemade pies.
Sydney’s cafe scene can sometimes be a little intimidating, but co-owners and managers, Richard Randell and Detlef Haupt, purposely set out to steer clear of exclusivity and to deliver a food experience to be shared. Richard oversees the daily café operations and Detlef is in charge of anything food related. Together they bring years of expertise in food and beverage preparation and management, working with their chefs, baristas and waiting staff to deliver an all-round experience that stands out even in Sydney’s café-rich culture.
The venues cater to local residents, professionals and tourists alike who pop in for a St. Ali Sensory Lab coffee and a chat, to hold an office breakfast meeting or just to sample a bit of Sydney life over a bagel lunch. The Rocks venue is particularly popular amongst the large base of creative and arts professionals and students who call this inner-city heritage village ‘home’. They appreciate design, music, food, coffee, wine and the finer things in life – which is why The Fine Food Store is such a popular haunt.
