Corner of Argyle Street & Kendall Lane, The Rocks, NSW
02 9252 1191
Situated in the Rocks on the corner of Argyle Street and Sydney's oldest cobblestone laneway, Kendall Lane, the former bond warehouse has been converted into a dining space that is sui generis.
Still honouring the building’s heritage, the decor adopts a rustic approach with commissioned woven art hangings juxtaposed against the heritage brick walls.
There are multiple vantage points to enjoy Pony Dining’s honest approach to food, from the outdoor deck with a stunning communal dining table, to the lounge bar or the main dining hall.
The Pony Group’s reputation as pioneers of the wood-fire grill precedes them, and Pony Dining the Rocks is the perfect place to sample their skills. You can see Irish born Head Chef, Neil Nolan, and his team at work in the huge open-plan kitchen with its own custom wood-fire grill and pony hide-clad kitchen counter. Neil has been with Pony Dining since the restaurant opened in 2008. Having been in Australia for over 15 years, Neil has adopted the country as his own and prides himself on using only the freshest ingredients to create dishes in house which showcase Australian produce.
With an uncomplicated approach to modern Australian food, Pony offers an honest, flavour-driven menu. This passion can be seen in their contemporary mix of grill dishes and share plates, which uses the finest cuts of meat and freshest seafood, all sourced locally. Favourites include the Wood-Fired Grilled Snapper with slow braised white bean and toasted white pudding, wholegrain mustard and dill, or the 300g Wagyu Rump with egg, capers, eschallot and the house mushroom ketchup.
Away from the grill, Pony also offers hearty dishes such as the Forest Mushroom Gnocchi with parmesan crème fraîche and walnuts. This menu is coupled with their extensive whiskey list and a boutique wine selection ranging from the Barossa Valley to Piedmont, Italy, so it is unsurprising that Pony has amassed a dedicated following.
Pony Group’s Sommelier, Marco Taddeo, maintains the wine list with a focus, where possible, on biodynamic viticulture and providing the best representation of wines available to match the current menu. Boutique wineries feature prominently, and a large selection is offered by the glass. There is also a fine selection of craft beers, and the cocktail menu is ever-changing. Pony bartenders are renowned for their flair, vision and creative instinct; therefore it is hard to forgo sampling from their range of classic and signature cocktails.
Given the venue’s open space as well as quieter nooks, the restaurant is great for both an intimate dinner date or dining with a larger group. The team is managed by Anne-Marie Jordan, so patrons can always expect great service and a warm welcome into the Pony dining family.
