On the beaches of Bondi is a relaxed beachside diner buzzing with energy. Boasting uninterrupted views of the ocean and serving some of the freshest, most irresistible seafood on the coast, North Bondi Fish personifies casual luxury.
Established in 2013, North Bondi Fish is owned by the Solotel hospitality group, headed by celebrity chef, Matt Moran and Bruce Solomon. As the beach baby of the Solotel family, North Bondi Fish oozes beachside chic and attracts everyone from local surfers and mums to tourists and young professionals.
Customers return for the relaxed ambience and the selection of fresh, mouth- watering dishes created by Head Chef, Zac Sykes. Zac’s career in cooking began at the age of 15 when he started working as a kitchen hand. Immediately, he fell in love with the noise and fast-paced nature of the kitchen, as well as the creative freedom that working with food offered him.
After completing his apprenticeship, Zac went on to specialise in cooking seafood, something he practiced at renowned restaurants including Fishface, Pier, est. and Coogee Pavilion. At North Bondi Fish, he brings a passion for fresh seafood and locally sourced ingredients as well as a do-it-yourself mentality that shines through in the exciting menu.
All of the seafood used at North Bondi Fish is sourced either locally or from New Zealand and is purchased fresh and whole. Zac and his team of chefs carry out every step of the seafood processing and preparation in-house, ensuring maximum quality and freshness.
This attention to detail might seem unnecessary at first but once you taste Zac’s creations, it will make sense. Start with a plate of tuna tataki served with soy, ginger, lime, tobiko and coriander; or the raw kingfish with avocado, blood orange, radish, espelette and wood sorrel.
More substantial meals include the signature chargrilled baby octopus with broad beans, garlic salsa, dried olive and lemon mayo; and the whiting tacos with spicy tomato, white cabbage and chipotle mayo. The popular bug meat linguine with lemon, garlic, chilli and bottarga also demonstrates the team’s talent for preparing and cooking seafood.
With extensive views of the nearby ocean, North Bondi Fish is the perfect place for an afternoon drink. Solotel Sommelier, Matt Dunne, has devised a wine list of local and international drops that perfectly suit the beachside ambience.
Sample a cocktail from the restaurant’s impressive list; the Bondi Bubble is a mix of Belvedere citrus vodka, berry liqueur, pink grapefruit, lime, lavender and ginger beer, while the spicy Watermelon Margarita blends tequila with salted watermelon, agave, chilli and lime for a flavoursome and refreshing treat.
The cocktails are best enjoyed on the sunny balcony where the panoramic ocean views can be fully appreciated. If the weather doesn’t permit, sit inside among the blue and white, and feast your eyes upon the beach-themed decor.
Wherever you sit, rest assured that you will leave satisfied. This beachside diner is dedicated to providing locals and visitors with the freshest, best quality seafood dishes in a relaxed and friendly space overlooking the waves.
