Deciding where to eat in Bondi is no task for the indecisive. With an abundance of culinary treats to choose from, you’ll no doubt struggle to settle for just one. However, in true Bondi fashion, it’s always best to follow the locals, and you’ll find them at Neighbourhood. With sounds of the chatter of hungry locals spilling out onto the sidewalk, the smells of sizzling jaffles being grilled and gobbled up hungrily, or the sights of the rustic, backyard style venue that welcomes you like an old friend, Neighbourhood Bondi truly does have it all.
The former site of Bondi FM’s headquarters, Neighbourhood continues to be a central meeting place for beachgoers and Bondi hipsters alike. The in-house radio station is still intact, renamed Radio Bondi featuring resident DJ’s all week long. Just past the rustic timber bar, no doubt lined with happy visitors chatting to the friendly bar staff, you’ll pass the radio booth and open plan kitchen on your way to the outdoor courtyard, adorned with hanging ferns and fairy lights that creates idyllic setting. The open-air yard makes for the perfect destination to start (and possibly end) a big night, for Sunday afternoon catch-ups over fresh rock oysters and a crisp glass of white, or for casual dining any night of the week.
Ticking all the boxes for great atmosphere, all that’s left to add is nourishment. As such, the Neighbourhood menu is full of classic homely dishes complete with a restaurant quality finish. Jaffles are the star of the show when it comes to cuisine – like the Jack Irish, stuffed with tater tots, pepper jack cheese and maple glazed bacon squished into one delicious parcel. The burgers are equally as noteworthy, with a ‘Secret Burger’ appearing once a week to keep things interesting. Think along the lines of a 10-hour roast lamb shoulder with baby spinach and tomato chilli jam sandwiched between a soft brioche bun, or the crispy panko crumbed chicken burger with Tonkatsu sauce, wasabi mayo and pickled ginger.
Wash it all down with a drop from their daring drinks menu featuring international organic wines, cocktails served in tiki cups and a signature house blended rum. If you’re feeling adventurous, opt for the Hoods Zombie cocktail, combining 6 different types of liquor with bitters, fresh grenadine, pineapple and citrus. But take this as a warning, this tropical nectar is not for the faint hearted, and as such is restricted to one per person per visit.
Offering up the quintessential Bondi experience, Neighbourhood is your one stop shop whatever the occasion. With a little bit of this and a little bit of that, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in a place that feels just like home.
