Kieron and Sean Prenter introduced Mexican cuisine to the northern beaches with a little help from ex pro-surfer, Nathan Webster. Their laid-back restaurant is more beachside diner than traditional taqueria, offering hand-rolled tortillas, mouth watering Mexican share plates and frozen margaritas.

Opened in late 2011, Mexicano is the first venture for the two Prenter brothers. Teaming up with Nathan, the three have created a vibrant venue, dedicated to giving customers the best experience possible. With Sean looking after the food side of things, Nathan has taken the reins of design and branding, while Kieron has become known as Mr Can Do Anything.

Sean oversees a menu of authentic Mexican bites ideal for sharing between friends and family at one of the communal dining tables. He brings a wealth of knowledge to the kitchen drawing on his experiences at restaurants such as Rockpool, Beach Road and Barbacoa Bali.

At Mexicano, Sean continues his dedication to creating quality meals from fresh, seasonal produce. Each Friday he and the kitchen team visit the Narrabeen Market where they select only the freshest fruit and vegetables. Sean has also fostered close relationships with small producers and suppliers from the region, ensuring as much as possible is kept local.

Mexicano is also one of the only Mexican restaurants in Australia that makes its own tortillas, and every day Sean and the team hand-roll and press tortillas using wheat and corn masa flours.

The menu at Mexicano has been structured in a way that allows for sharing. This means that not only can you enjoy tortillas and tacos but you can order the chargrilled corn with chipotle mayo, cheese, lime and smoked spice and a bowl of fries with Valentina piquant sauce. Another favourite is the chipotle beef chimichangas with sweet cucumber and chilli salsa.

Try the signature taco, which includes battered fish, chipotle mayo, slaw and pineapple chutney, or the slow-cooked pork belly taco with pickled red onion, pickled fresh jalapeño and aioli. Alternatively, opt for the braised lamb shoulder quesadilla with mint salsa verde, goat’s cheese and sweet onion for a crisp, cheesy snack.

The best part is the Mexican dessert, with sweet options including churros with cinnamon sugar and salted caramel, or a simple ice-cream sandwich.

If you thought the food options were mouth-watering, Mexicano’s selection of margaritas will blow your mind. Frozen margaritas are on tap at the beachside venue, while chocolate, and jalapeño margaritas can be whipped up on request. You will also find a good selection of noteworthy wines on the drinks menu to accompany your meal.

Mexicano has established itself as the home of laid-back and authentic Mexican cuisine on the Northern Beaches. Showcasing the traditional flavours and textures of Mexico, it strikes a perfect balance between flavoursome fare and relaxed dining.
