Sydney's Lotus Dumpling Bar is turning the concept of traditional Chinese dumpling houses on its head with a high-end, boutique-style dumpling eatery and bar that still holds true to the authentic way of making dumplings. Stemming from Chinese street food culture where food carts only utilise fresh ingredients, the restaurant offers traditional Chinese street food that can be made to order.

Located in the cultural heart of Sydney’s best-known theatres at Walsh Bay, Lotus Dumpling Bar attracts waves of pre-theatre diners. Opposite the venue lives The Sydney Dance Company and a little further down the road the Sydney Theatre itself. The team have nurtured the dumpling bar’s ever-increasing residential following and see the locals as the heart of Lotus.

A feature wall has bricks peeled back to reveal Chinese script, whilst jade green tones and fernery are juxtaposed with bright copper fittings adding to the venueås chic aesthetic. Copper pendant lights set the mood over the white marble bar, where patrons can take a front row seat to witness the dumpling theatrics of Lotus’ two dumpling Head Chefs, Lucy Lao and Marble Ng.

Lucy has been nicknamed the ‘dumpling queen’ and has been hand-making dumplings for 30 years. Lucy learnt the art in her home country of China where she worked as part of the team of chefs responsible for preparing the food of Chinese leaders. She was also one of the chefs who prepared the welcome dinner for former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher when she visited China. She is renowned for her dumplings back home and is now making her mark on satisfied Australians. Marble is a rising star of equal talent, and is known as a master chef of dumplings. The dumplings are made fresh before your eyes; filled, wrapped and steamed to order. Try their signature Violet Argyle dumpling, or perhaps the Lotus Xiao Long Bao, or the Scallop and Vegetable Shumai; and if the variety of choices seems too overwhelming, there is even a banquet menu to satisfy a variety of tastes.

Lotus Dumpling Bar takes on a more innovative approach than the more traditional dumpling houses, with elegant cocktails and a wine list to complement the food perfectly. Well aware of the growing need for a healthier, clean dining experience, all of Lotus’ produce is both seasonal and Australian grown. The meat (Argyle Beef) is hormone free and there is no MSG in sight of the kitchen. It makes for the perfect dining spot for any group as it caters for all your gluten, vegetarian, coeliac or even paleo friends.

The sweet teeth don’t have to miss out either as dessert is taken care of by Gelato Messina. Or try a dessert cocktail from the bar like the Espresso Martini or Last Cigarette, a cocktail composed of Black spiced Rum stirred with Kahlua coffee liqueur, Frangelico hazelnut liqueur and Chocolate Bitters served in a Coupe in a caramelised cinnamon and sugar-rimmed glass. You don’t need a trip to the theatre or to be a local to have an excuse to visit Lotus, as dumplings made by hand, to order, is reason enough.
