Smack bang in the middle of Bondi’s hub you’ll find Da Orazio Pizza + Porchetta, a local haunt mixing a cool, modern atmosphere with authentic Italian fare.

Born and raised in Naples, Head Chef and co-owner Orazio D’Elia knows what he’s talking about when it comes to pizza. As the home of the much-loved Italian staple, Naples has its own Neapolitan Pizza Association (AVPN), which ensures the highest standards are maintained across restaurants with this qualification. Orazio’s pizzas fall under this banner – they are naturally risen for 48 hours, 100% handmade and cooked in the traditional wood-fired brick oven that was imported from his motherland.

In creating Da Orazio, Orazio was joined by the powerhouses behind iconic restaurant Icebergs Dining Room and Bar, Maurice Terzini and Rachel Duffy. Maurice has spent decades in Australia’s hospitality industry, making his mark through venues like Caffe e Cucina on Melbourne’s Chapel Street, The Dolphin Hotel in Surry Hills and of course, Icebergs. His latest work has seen him spread his love of North Italian food to Bali, with Da Maria.

Together, the pair make an unsurpassable team. But how exactly did a formidable restauranteur and Italian chef come to partner? Orazio and Maurice met when Orazio opened Popolo in Rushcutters Bay. A great friendship was built, and an eagerness to collaborate saw Orazio join the kitchen at Icebergs. A year later, Da Orazio Pizza + Porchetta was created and their plans came into fruition. At the Hall Street building, good food, fashion, music and drinks combine, presenting a dining experience that’s about more than just the quality of the food.

That said, as the hero of the menu, every Da Orazio experience should start with pizza. Using high quality authentic ingredients such as fior di latte, San

Marzano tomatoes and San Daniele prosciutto, the kitchen team focuses on minimal ingredients with maximum quality. The results are obvious in pizzas like the Friarielli – a mix of smoked mozzarella, sausage, broccoli rabe and chilli, and the Caponatina, topped with smoked mozzarella, fior di latte, zucchini, capsicum, eggplant and cherry tomatoes.

Looking for more than just pizza? The antipasti and small plates continue the focus on quality produce, with dishes such as San Daniele prosciutto with buffalo mozzarella and eggplant involtini. As the venue’s name suggests, the porchetta alla romana is a restaurant speciality. Berkshire pork is de-boned, rolled and slow-roasted, before being cooked and served the traditional Italian way.

What’s Italian food without Italian wine? At Da Orazio, each wine is chosen for its sustainability and organic or natural production methods, ensuring the footprint it leaves behind is minimal. Start with a Friuli prosecco before moving onto an Abruzzo montepulciano – the choice is yours. There’s also a unique selection of built drinks that take advantage of Maurice’s access to seasonal fruits; try the number 8 – Ciroc vodka, Campari and ruby grapefruit – for a tastebud-tingling start to your meal.

Come Friday night, DJs keep the vibe going late into the night. You’ll be able to pop by as late as 10pm to enjoy the atmosphere of a bar, with the food of an authentic pizzeria.
