Those visiting Continental Deli Bar and Bistro be warned: there’s a strong chance you’ll be popping in for a quick dash around the deli, and end up staying for lunch, possibly dinner and a cocktail or two. This multi-purpose eatery is ticking all the boxes for casual dining, top tier delicatessen produce, and even an opportunity for fine dining in the adjoining bistro.
Owners, Elvis Abrahanowicz and Joe Valore, are no strangers to the demands of Sydney’s ever0changing hospitality scene. With the likes of Porteño, Gardel’s Bar, Bodega, and LP’s Quality Meats under their belt, you can enjoy everything the Continental Deli has to offer knowing that you’re in the best hands. To cover both the deli and bistro kitchens, they enlisted the culinary finesse of Head Chef Jesse Warkentin, who has developed a European and Mediterranean style menu that is perfect for sharing.
Continental Deli takes on the classic set up, complete with tresses of garlic and chillies hanging from the ceiling, jars of house made pickles, chutneys and sauces lining the walls and attentive white apron-clad staff behind the counter to provide for your every delicatessen desire. You’ll notice an abundance of tinned and canned goods with goodies from anchovies and sardines to cocktails and cakes. Far from your average produce, tins of mussels in house-made marinade from Cambados, Espinaler fine clams, and La velle-iloise sardines. It’s all about being grand and canned.
Pick up some fresh charcuterie or delicious imported cheeses from Italy, France and beyond, or settle in and let Jesse and his team do the cooking for you. In true deli style, opt for the meatball and parmigiana riggiano sandwich, or perhaps something a little more adventurous like the fish and chips with house-tinned Ortiz sardines and potato chips. Finish it off with something sweet – in a can of course, like the neopoli-tin gelato with banana, chocolate and peanut icy treats, or the cake in a can, a chocolate and kumquat pudding served with sweet caramel and tart yoghurt gelato, all in the confines of one rustic tin.
The daytime deli turns into a casual dining space as the sun goes down, dishing up relaxed meals that highlight the freshest products and boldest flavours from their delicatessen range. All this eating can be thirsty work, and fortunately if you’re a cocktail connoisseur, you’ve come to the right place. Continental Deli is the birthplace of the Mar-Tinny, the Can-Hatten and the Cosmopoli-tin – cocktails, served straight from the can.
The closest thing to being in Europe is eating like you are – and Continental Deli is making this that little bit easier with their delicious deli meals and take-home produce for you to devour as though you’re soaking up the Italian sun with a cheese platter in one hand and a glass of wine in the other.
