Love French food? Blend this with flavours from Africa and India and you may have found the ultimate taste fix. Cafe by morning, restaurant by night, the foodies who set up Bitton Cafe and Bistro have ticked all the boxes.
David Bitton and his wife, Sohani, first opened their restaurant in 2000, deep in Alexandria and with no other cafe offerings in sight. Since then, the suburb has been transformed, with a new wave of cafes and restaurants changing the former industrial area into a vibrant foodie mecca.
Both David and Sohani have enjoyed distinguished careers in the hospitality industry, predominately in five star hotels. Parisian-born and trained, David has extensive experience as a chef, he also stakes claim to a Moroccan and Turkish legacy through his grandparents. Sohani’s expertise lies in the marketing and business side of things, and her South African Indian heritage makes for a diverse and eclectic range of culinary influences. Bitton is a place where exotic traditions of food come together, and they taste oh so good.
Produce is locally sourced as much as possible, with breads and pastries courtesy of Brasserie Bread, meat from Game Farm, and cakes and tarts from Choco Cannelle. The team of baristas are also happy to explain the intricacies of their celebrated Grinders Coffee.
Complemented by a seasonal menu, and an all-day breakfast, Bitton is a small piece of perfection smack bang in the middle of Alexandria. The classic French dishes such as Crêpes with Bitton strawberry and vanilla jam will tempt you, while the one-pan bacon and eggs will keep you full all day long.
Lunch and dinner offer a whole host of delectable choices. This colourful and versatile menu is accompanied by a well-crafted wine and beverage menu boasting New Zealand, French and Australian wine, and spirits from places as far afield as Japan and Poland.
The location, just across from Erskineville Park, provides you with relief from the bustling urban lifestyle. There is also a safe play area and a menu especially for children so you can be sure that this place is family friendly. Bitton has a fully equipped function room known as The Bitton Room, for social or professional gatherings, catering for up to 50 people.
More than just a cafe and bistro, Bitton is a gourmet grocer to boot, stocking a wide range of boutique preserves, dressings and sauces. Everything is homemade and often incorporated into their own dishes, speaking volumes of their high quality and excellent flavour.
