First comes Alpha, then comes Beta. It may sound like you’re reciting the Greek alphabet, but for Peter Conistis, it’s the evolution of his restaurant empire.

Beta Bar is the little sister of Alpha, the restaurant Peter owns and operates from within the historic Hellenic Club on Castlereagh Street. Occupying the first level, Beta celebrates the grandeur of ancient Greece through its design, food and drink offerings.

Distressed exposed brick, large architraves and elegant furnishings are contrasted against turquoise accents and indigo couches, setting the scene for what’s to come – a contemporary yet traditional exploration of the Greek culture.

If you’re not getting that idea already, turn to the marble bar – taking pride of place in the long space, it’s creatively back-lit and decorated with every spirit imaginable. Take a seat under the heritage windows to begin your journey through Greek fare, starting with the cocktails.

The refined cocktail list is designed to be paired with small Greek-inspired dishes. Start with the Fos Anthinas to get your tastebuds wagging – it combines vodka, passionfruit, lime, lavender juice and pomegranate. From there, you can move onto a classic Beta Negroni. There’s also the option of sticking to the Greek theme and trying one of the many ouzo offerings, or even a Greek wine.

The meze menu poses some difficult choices. Twice-cooked octopus souvlaki skewers with split pea dip and preserved orange begins the train of indecision, while the sweetbread popcorn and zhoug skordalia makes your mouth pop just thinking about it. But rest assured, whatever you choose, it’s guaranteed to be good.

If Beta Bar is your after-dinner cocktail spot, there is also a sweet menu to finish off the night right. Try the almond milk galaktoboureko with soumada and salted almonds, or simply go with the daily cheese selection, accompanied by roasted apple tart and spelt pita bread.

With a space this stunning, it would be rude to not offer it as a function space. Lucky for Sydneysiders, they do. Perfect for weddings and drink receptions, Beta Bar provides a classy and sophisticated space for large groups to enjoy.
