Bert’s Brasserie & Bar
2 Kalinya St, Newport NSW

Merivale’s much-loved northern beaches watering hole, The Newport, has a new addition – a elegantly old-school bar and brasserie specialising in coastal European eats.
We’re talking about Bert’s, with its 1930s-esque dining rooms and swish cocktail lounges. The restaurant’s soft jade green and coral pink palette ties in with the existing rustic decor of the pub to create an airy, seaside ambiance, with open kitchens scattered around the brasserie. Though the look of Bert’s is all glamour and refinement, the dining style will be casual and informal, in keeping with the vibe of The Newport as a whole.
“We want to create that sense of relaxed indulgence you experience on a coastal European holiday,” says Executive Chef, Jordan Toft. “It’s very special, yet completely fuss-free – beautiful, fresh produce served simply and elegantly.”
Jordan’s menu features fresh dishes that take inspiration from the northern beaches’ surroundings, with a heavy focus on seafood. Stepping aside from the culinary trend of sharing dishes and tapas style eating, the menu at Bert’s is designed just for you, so you can choose your own entrée, main and dessert to devour without having to fight off other forks. From the raw bar you can expect freshly shucked oysters and dressed crab, while a glance at the larder will reveal charcuterie and fresh salads. Take a stroll over to the lobster tank and take your pick for your main – it’s freshness at its finest.
No culinary indulgence is complete without wine, and it’s not just the wine list that takes centre stage but their physical display that kick-starts the wow-factor. Sommelier, Franck Moreau, has curated an Australian-centric list that will colour you happy. If wine isn’t your thing, sip on a European inspired cocktail designed by Sam Egerton, like the classic Royale that combines Absolut Elyx vodka with ginger cordial and champagne, topped with finger lime caviar for something a little bit fancy.
Since taking over The Newport (or The Newport Arms as it used to be called) in 2015, Merivale has injected their magic touch while still remaining true to the inherent character of the much-loved community pub. Now, with Bert’s soon to arrive, this character is still well and truly alive, with just another avenue to experience it. Bert’s is slated to open in early January, and we don’t need to tell you twice that this is one to keep an eye on.
