Barzaari is turning up the heat on the streets of Marrickville, serving up all things Lebanese, Greek, Cypriot and Turkish to hungry Sydneysiders.
This new spot for spice is changing the face of old-school Middle Eastern cooking, adding a contemporary twist to tradition.
Owners, Darryl Martin and Andrew Jordanou, are no strangers to Sydney’s hospitality scene. Darryl’s career has spanned the kitchens of Sydney institutions like Quay, Foveaux and 3 Weeds. Andrew’s hospitality journey began in his family’s restaurant, Splash, which when combined with his Cypriot heritage, made for the perfect partnership with Darryl. Together, the duo has combined the flavours of the Middle East, with traditional cooking techniques and a ‘bazaar-like’ atmosphere, creating a dining experience that’s unlike anything Sydney has seen before.
Whilst their Middle Eastern flair is showcased in the food, Darryl and Andrew have appealed to the locals in the restaurant’s decor, encapsulating the quintessential Marrickville ambience. The exposed brick walls and artwork by local talent, Jack Egan, are paired with modern touches and a rustic finish to align with the suburb’s edgy character.
Barzaari’s menu is designed to be shared, in true Middle Eastern style. Open with a snack of wood-roasted nectarine with lountza, feta, almond and lemon, and a few small plates – perhaps the pastourma with caraway dried tomato and warm cabbage salad, and halloumi with BBQ zucchini, tabouleh and roasted grapes?
For something a little larger, choices range from pork neck with fennel, yoghurt and pita, to octopus and loukaniko with braised capsicum, black eye beans and silverbeet. To finish, treat yourself to a little sweetness with baklava with quince ice cream or sip on a Cypriot-style soujouko coffee cooked in heated sand.
Just a short walk from the Enmore Theatre, Barzaari is the ideal place to stop by for a pre-show cocktail and a bite or two from the bar menu. Curated by Sommelier, Dennis Roman, drops from the wine list pair beautifully with the exotic flavours of the dishes, as do the refreshing cocktails, designed by Tomi Bjork of BW Restaurants.
Pre-show dinners are served on Tuesday through to Saturday, with lunch on Friday to Sunday. Stop by to discover what all the fuss is about – Barzaari is casual Middle Eastern dining at its best.
