The Grounds of Alexandria
7A/2 Huntley Steet, Alexandria, NSW
02 9699 2225
Expect the unexpected when you visit this ground-breaking hospitality venue established in the industrial back 'burbs of Sydney. Single-handedly, The Grounds of Alexandria has put this suburb on the map.
The local icon is spearheaded by food entrepreneur, Ramzey Choker, and World Latte Art Champion and all-round coffee expert, Jack Hanna. From being the youngest barista ever to have won a coffee world title, Jack went on to develop his own coffee venture ‘Jack and The Bean’. Fate led Ramzey, an enthusiastic student striving for the perfect brew, to one of his coffee courses.
Soon after, the pair set off on an ambitious coffee adventure, developing a new coffee brand, The Grounds. What initially found its legs as a café and coffee roastery, is now a hospitality empire that houses many arms under the Grounds name. Encompassing the Roastery Café, Research Facility, Potting Shed, Atrium, Artisan Bakery, and Organic Micro-farm, the Grounds of Alexandria is the culmination of several independent projects, combined to form one seamless entity.
Founded on a seed-to-plate approach to dining, the Grounds offers a wholesome take on food and design. It’s been described as an escape from the city within the city, a virtual holiday farm. Ramzey has a family ethos, and lives by the motto – “No one is going to love your company until you and your employees do.”
This energetic dynamic can be seen across the whole Grounds family and makes for an enjoyable experience the moment you step into the Huntley street venue. The design is a complementary blend of rustic with contemporary, including leather banquettes, custom-made cabinetry and polished white and green subway tiles contrasted against vintage wooden tables and refitted shipping containers.
With an abundant organic garden overflowing with heirloom vegetables, edible flowers, fragrant herbs, fresh fruit, it is no wonder The Grounds has a full-time horticulturist. Did we fail to mention they also own a small brood of chickens, goats and their somewhat celebrity-status pig, Kevin Bacon.
Monthly markets are held, where patrons can peruse the abundance of fresh produce available with coffee in hand. The family affair includes live music performances, arts and craft activities and a petting zoo for the kids. As well as produce from local suppliers The Grounds supplies its own treats including jams, hampers, fresh cut flowers, charcoal roast rolls, snow cones, homemade pastries and organic breads.
Also rumour has it that the Groundskeeper will let you in on a secret if you speak really nicely to him. You can enter the room known as the lock-in, where you and a handful of your friends can relax at this private bar and enjoy a selection of small-batch spirits and where there’s enough room for just you and your selected friends. But shhh, you didn’t hear it from us.
With so many facets to this food institution, no matter what the occasion is, and you happen to descend upon The Grounds, you will not leave disappointed.
