Anthony Kaplan swore he’d never own another cafe after opening and closing his first one in the nineties. Fast forward to 2004 and he found himself going back on his word, opening The Shop and Wine Bar, the first small bar in Bondi.
The restaurateur and bar owner now has his fingers in a number of different Bondi venues, including The Shop, The Corner House, Panama House and as of November 2014, the revamped Bondi Bowling Club.
The Shop and Wine Bar was his first foray into the bar scene, creating an all-day space offering specialty coffee, breakfast, lunch and dinner, and a great atmosphere. With Anthony in charge of overseeing his many locations, husband-and-wife team, Mike and Lucy Haskas, hold down the fort with Mike caressing the coffee and Lucy manning the kitchen.
If that doesn’t have you rushing through the door, the brightly patterned walls and rustic interiors will certainly catch your eye. Wide French doors frame the main entrance, providing access to small tables nestled away near the front counter. A coffee window is covered in potted plants and coffee products; enticing passerbys to grab one on the go. Stools also line the exterior walls, perfect for perching with a coffee or two.
Mike works with Gabriel Specialty Coffee Roasters for his espresso-based offerings, serving a house blend with beans from Kenya, Ethiopia, New Guinea and Sumatra. Called Monte Carlo, it has a full bodied chocolate taste when made with milk. Its medium acidity and syrupy mouth feel gives black coffee lovers a fruity well balanced cup, making it a very satisfying formula. They chose Gabriel Coffee because of owner, Sam Gabrielan’s knowledge and talent, as well as his welcoming attitude that made Mike feel part of the family.
Food is available from 7am everyday until late, starting with breakfast bites all the way through to dinner dishes. Choose from the impressive selection of antipasto and cheese platters, homemade burgers and other Italian–inspired plates. Early risers can grab classics with a twist, including the delicious BLT with gherkins and smashed avocado, served with roma tomatoes and basil on wild rice and quinoa bread; or the breakfast salad with hot smoked trout, corn salsa, lentils, peas and avocado. Oversized soft sandwiches are the belles of the ball during the day. Fillings include hot Italian meatballs and poached chicken with chilli jam. There are also generous salads to try, including a seared, chipotle chicken salad with tortilla chips, black beans and corn salsa.
True to its name, when the clock strikes twelve a curated wine list appears alongside the coffee menu for an afternoon pick me up of a different type.
