In a tiny Woolloomooloo store, seating just a handful of lucky diners, is a small bakery with big dreams and an even bigger vision – Flour and Stone.
Home to some of Sydney’s favourite cakes, donuts of grand proportions, rainbow-glazed gingerbread cookies and an abundance of other delicious goodies, this quaint little bakery is wise beyond its years when it comes to pastries, cakes and all things sweet.
Flour and Stone is the brainchild of Pastry Chef, Nadine Ingram, whose 25 years of experience working in the kitchens of Bourke Street Bakery, Le Gavroche and London’s The Ivy equipped her with the skills and vision for her solo Sydney venture.
Flour and Stone is very much a family business, starting from Nadine’s own kitchen in Marrickville before setting up shop in Woolloomooloo in 2011. Since then it has grown with every lamington and vanilla cake that passes through the door and is showing no signs of slowing down. The business is a tribute to Nadine’s two daughters, and the script that adorns the white exterior is courtesy of her grandmother.
The menu is seasonally driven, thus a year sees a huge cycle of change, from flaky ricotta tarts in summer to warm bread and butter puddings in winter. Savoury pies and freshly baked breads stuffed to the brim with delicious fillings are musts in the cooler months, whilst the signature hand-sliced apple tart is an ideal treat as the sun starts to come out. However, a few menu staples are consistent throughout the year, particularly the Pana cotta Lamington that Nadine noted has a ‘cult-like following’, and the Lemon Drizzle Cake, which was named Sydney’s best cake by Time Out.
Nadine also conducts baking classes regularly to pass on her knowledge and expertise of baking to those who worship her sweet treats. Alongside her loyal team, Nadine is turning out some of Sydney’s favourite pastries for their faithful locals and visitors alike. With every decision made with visitors best interests in mind, Flour and Stone operates an innate commitment to community that is truly unmatched.
