Flat White Cafe has served the Woollahra community since 2002, and, during the past 12 years, it has attracted a loyal audience of hungry locals and visitors.
The menu offers home-made cakes and new takes on café classics, and the restaurant lives up to its name, serving an excellent flat white using its own coffee blend. Bobby Mueller, backed by a group of friends and investors, took ownership of the cafe in 2012, and, managing the day-to-day operations, he serves a diverse crowd of locals and those passing through the suburb.
At Flat White Cafe, Bobby aims to make every customer feel like a Woollahra local. “Many of our clientele know the staff by name,” he says. “They also run into their friends and neighbours at the cafe.” Manager and head barista, Chris Cowan, has worked at the café since it opened, and he knows many customers not only by name but by coffee. “Most of the time, Chris will start making a customer’s coffee before they even get out of their car,” Bobby said. “That individual service is what brings people back.” The cafe’s personal coffee blend is a mix of four single origins from Ethiopia, Nicaragua, and Java and Sumatra, Indonesia.
For all you late risers, Flat White Cafe serves breakfast all day, seven days a week. Dave Hughes serves as Head Chef, and he offers a delicious selection of baked goods each day, ranging from cakes and cookies to banana bread and fig and apricot fruit bread. The café uses Infinity Sourdough, and Dave offers interesting twists on café favourites; for instance, poached eggs on toast are jazzed up by adding feta, spinach, pine nuts, and za’atar spice. The Ricotta Hotcakes are light and sweet, served with strawberries, maple syrup, and cinnamon butter, and milkshakes and freshly squeezed juices top the drink list.
For lunch, the food continues to be familiar and well prepared. Try the Roasted Pork Belly Sandwich with crackling or the 7-Hour Lamb Sandwich with tomato relish. For those looking for something lighter, the café offers a Spiced Roasted Cauliflower & Honey Roasted Carrot Salad with kale, barley & a pomegranate-molasses tahini yoghurt and its Roasted Pumpkin Salad, with hazelnuts, rocket, and feta.
Continuing to support the Woollahra neighborhood when it can, Flat White Cafe has helped the Woollahra Public School to create its own cookbook. Titled The Woollahra Kitchen: Recipes from our community, the book was published in 2013. “We are happy to support other local initiatives and fundraisers such as the Queen Street & West Woollahra Asscociation as well as the local schools,” said Bobby.
Born in Canada, Bobby was a true farm boy until he visited Sydney. In Sydney, he fell in love – both with the city and romantically – and he made the complete move in 2007. Bobby had 15 years of experience in the food and beverage industry before purchasing Flat White Cafe, and ten of those years were spent cooking in fine dining restaurants, hotels, and cafes. He also gained experience working front of house in bakeries, boutique wine shops, and delicatessens.
