Witty and whimsical, Cuckoo Callay transports you to another world of delicious delights.
Taking inspiration from the iconic Jabberwocky poem by Lewis Carroll, the bustling cafe delivers left-of-centre flavours with a touch of quick and humour.
Situated next to Newtown train station, Cuckoo Callay is located in one of the area’s busiest thoroughfares. However, stepping off the busy train and into the space quickly removes you from the reality of your daily grind, welcoming you in for that much-needed coffee hit.
The concept is headed by Ibrahim Moubadder and Eleanor Harris, who designed both the food and the fitout to be playful and enticing. The interior pays homage to Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, and was designed by local company, Giant Design. As a result, floating amplified cuckoo clocks and bright coloured seats and booths all appear alongside a projector that plays black and white films. Brass trimmings and story telling posters complete the look, taking you on an adventure everywhere you look.
When it comes to the food, the seasonally driven dishes are intrinsically considered and artfully designed, crafting a clever story behind each spread. Signature dishes include the Green Eyed Monster – sauteed green beans, broccolini and kale with spicy chermoula, avocado, lime, labneh and a dukkah-crusted poached egg; and the Sideways Shuffle – blue swimmer crab cake with corn and avocado salsa, watermelon, cucumber and lemon jelly, and a poached egg.
If you’re looking for something a little more recognisable, the Gorgeous George features marinated avocado and tomato on toasted sourdough with goat’s curd, house-made basil pesto and a poached egg.
The beverage list is equally as inventive. Cuckoo Callay has a strong focus on quality coffee, serving coffee from Single O. Original drink concepts include homemade lemonade and an array of shakes, including flavours such as peanut butter and jelly. Giddy with the vivid colours attracting the eye, guests can continue the fun and enjoy a brunch cocktail or local beer and wine.
Cuckoo Callay brings the weird and wonderful to the streets of Newtown. For a brunch that’s out of this world, there’s only one place to be.
