When you think of Redfern, you’ll be excused for thinking more of smashed avocado and sports pubs than fine dining and top shelf whisky. However, there’s a new kid in town who’s bringing back that old school charm while playing on its Redfern digs – Misfits is all about an eclectic mix of style, the old and the new in one up-and-coming venue.
Misfits is yet another hospitality venture by a tried and tested Sydney cohort, the W. Short Hotel Group. With venues like the Glenmore, Leichardt’s The Royal and The Tudor in Redfern under its belt, this team knows what’s up when it comes to Sydney’s food and bev scene. Combining 60s and 70s retro style with a sleek, contemporary finish, complete with Twiggy on the walls and the Rolling Stones playing softly in the background, Misfits is the melting pot of old school style and culture in the heart of Redfern.
Wander up the stairs to the bar, where you can indulge in a nip of single malt whisky, a classic cocktail or a local craft beer on tap. Whatever tickles your fancy, you’ll find it here. Once you’ve picked your poison, meander through to the dining room. Here, you’ll be treated to a fine dining standard meal in a casual setting, thanks to Executive Chef James Privett.
“This is fun, delicious, slightly sophisticated casual dining that compliments the great bar atmosphere of Misfits,” says James.
Think smoky beef tartare with charcoal crisps or crab rolls by the bar. Work your way down to a delicious seafood prawn tortellini or perhaps the roasted double lamb cutlet served with eggplant, smoked potatoes and broccolini for a substantial meal that will keep you fuelled for the night ahead. If it’s a pub meal your heart yearns for, Misfits can do – with a smoked cheese and beef burger served with a house-made relish and crispy shoestring fries.
Top it all off with a stroll to the cocktail bar, where the talented bartenders are more than happy to oblige to your espresso martini cravings. These aren’t your average concoctions, however, with Misfits spicing things up with caramel, coconut, spices and honeycomb coming into the mix in this classic coffee based tipple.
Misfits opened its doors in early August, and has settled right in. Serving up afternoon drinks into dinner every day, and extended hours on Friday from morning till late, pop in and see what all the fuss is about.
