There is truly no substitute for how food can bring people together. Be it families sharing a Sunday dinner, or old friends catching up over breakfast, food is the constant that unites us all. Open Farm Community is taking the concept of food relationships one step further, revolutionising the link between people and what they eat. The result? A new dining and drinking experience, together with a cafe culture, that brings customers closer to the source.
The multi-pronged food and beverage concept is the collaborative vision of Spa Esprit Group and Edible Garden City. Cynthia Chua, founder of the Spa Esprit Group, has been essential to Open Farm Community’s success, thanks to her acute ability to spot and execute upcoming trends.
Open Farm Community is an experiential space that pays homage to the best of Singapore’s local produce and unique flavours. As such, a majority of the ingredients are sourced from farms in and around Singapore. The kitchen team includes chef couple, Oliver Truesdale- Jutras, Head Chef, and his partner and Sous Chef Phoebe Oviedo.
Before their move to the helm, the couple travelled the world for 3 1⁄2 years, taking over restaurants to showcase their culinary expertise with ingredients sourced only from the country they were in and committing to a regimen of supporting the local producers and discovering the native ingredients and traditions.
The menu at OFC is an embodiment of their passion with an exploration of locally sourced ingredients. It features exciting mains like the Japanese inspired Barramundi, procured from a marine fish farm, Tiberias Harvest, located of
the North-eastern coast of Pulau Ubin, Singapore. The close proximity of the farm to the city means is delivered within six hours of harvest from the sea. It is then steamed in dashi butter, seasoned with a Furikake made from local seaweed and Pulut Hitam, and complemented with pea shoots and blue pea flowers harvested from OFC’s garden.
Rediscover a local favourite executed with a contemporary twist, the Southern Malay Laksa is creatively reinterpreted in Crab and Prawn Laksa Pappardelle. The earthy and smoky pasta incorporates multiple local ingredients such as mushrooms from Kin Yan, organic tofu from Unicurd, and sorrel from Edible Garden City.
The 6,000-square-foot space boasts both indoor and outdoor dining spaces, including a drinks bar and an open kitchen. The large, outdoor agriculture landscape is dotted with herbs and vegetable plots, free-range (pet) chickens, an outdoor recreational terrace and children play areas.
As per its namesake, Open Farm Community places a huge emphasis on community. Workshops, farmer’s markets and a host of outdoor activities, such as lawn bowls and table tennis, help to bring families and friends together in one space to eat, drink and enjoy Singapore’s finest. Held every few months, The Social Market also encourages urban dwellers to develop a greater appreciation for Singapore’s agricultural industry and backyard produce.
