Medhurst Wines is the realisation of a dream. It was a long-held and shared vision of Ross and Robyn Wilson to own a property in the Yarra Valley where they could produce high quality wines. All they needed was the perfect site. After years of searching, they found it, nestled near the Warramate Ranges.
Their hard work and determination has ensured that now, more than 15 years later, Medhurst Wines is a boutique winery producing expressive single vineyard wines from cool-climate and estate-grown sites.
The vineyard – named simply after the road it’s located on – boasts a favourable microclimate, north-facing slopes, good drainage and magnificent aspect, all drawcards when Ross and Robyn were searching all those years ago. They planted chardonnay, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and sauvignon blanc vines across 15 hectares, and continue to make these straight varietals. They have also diversified, producing a rosé (from shiraz and cabernet), YRB (pinot and shiraz blend), and Frances (a late-harvest sauvignon blanc).
In their determination to produce the best wine possible, Ross and Robyn have managed their vineyard very carefully, ensuring the yields are low – averaging less than two tonnes per acre – producing intensely flavoured fruit.
They are joined by Head Winemaker, Simon Steele, who holds 20 years experience in winemaking. Simon started out working in the south of France and has since plied his trade all over the world, with stints in the Hunter
Valley, South Australia, France and Spain. He works his magic in the state-of-the-art winery, designed by Ross and Robyn’s son, Tim, and his business partner, Christie Petsinis, who together make up Folk Architects. The clever design features underground barrel storage for temperature consistency and sits in harmony with its hillside setting.
The vines are grown with a sustainable approach, hand-pruned, trained and hand-picked to ensure consistency and a premium product. You can see what difference this all makes by stopping by the Cellar Door for a taste. Located on the hill overlooking the vineyard, it’s not only home to spectacular wine but an outstanding view and a wonderful cafe.
You’ll definitely want to try the rosé – it’s Medhurst’s signature drop, very pale salmon in colour with clean lines and a tangy fresh strawberry finish of good length. Also take the time to taste the 2015 Medhurst Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir, which is a classic cool-climate pinot with an enticing perfume and complex fruit flavours.
With such a diverse and celebrated range, Medhurst Wines is well worth the visit. Venture to Medhurst Road to find a vibrant vineyard and fantastic Cellar Door, with wine upon wine just waiting to be tasted and tried.
