Every Sunday, flocks of thirsty Bellarine locals arrive at the cellar door of Leura Park Estate, ready for an afternoon of premium maritime-climate wines paired with live music, a bucketful of sunshine and a menu packed full of local produce.
The time-honoured tradition is a testament to Leura Park Estate’s longevity. Despite being just shy of 11 years old, it quickly established itself as one of the mainstays of the Bellarine Peninsula’s wine industry. This is in part due to the careful guidance of Lyndsay and David Sharp, who purchased the vineyard in 2007. Their passion for food, wine and the Bellarine has shone through in a very short space of time.
The bustling Cellar Door is one half of the Leura Park empire that the Sharps have built with the help of the Estate Winemaker, Darren Burke. Together, they’ve created superior, innovative wines that have locals and visitors coming back time and time again.
Leura Park’s range has a distinctive and delightful French subtlety. The established wines have won countless awards and each year the drops have critics raving. Darren maintains a commitment to quality by using state-of-the-art on-site facilities and ‘methode traditionelle’ to showcase grape integrity.
The Block 1 Reserve Chardonnay quickly attracted critical acclaim, winning the Halliday Chardonnay Challenge in 2012. Using hand-picked grapes from the pride of its vines, Leura Park Estate has created a drop for which words can barely do justice. The brilliant array of sparklings are equally as revered. The multi-award-winning sparkling Blanc de Blanc is particularly superb, crafted from estate-grown premium Bellarine fruit. It is a hallmark of Leura Park’s finesse.
It’s not just about wine. The Cellar Door is perfectly poised to complement the quality wine offerings. As well as the light-drenched alfresco area for sunny days, there is a roaring open fire to enjoy during winter. It’s this overall chic ambience that makes it the ideal year-round location, and under the friendly watch of Cellar Door Manager and local legend, Keryn Bailey – who is rumoured to know every single grape on the property by name – you know you’re in for a treat.
Head Chef, David Hutchinson, creates a hearty, homely menu that’s perfect for those who like a little bit of everything. It features an ever-changing array of local gourmet produce, with cured meats, beer-battered fish, spicy Moroccan lamb on house-made pita, dips, cheeses and crusty bread all appearing. The stone-fired pizzas are a mainstay, with options such as the rosemary and potato, topped with ricotta and roasted garlic.
Leura Park is the ideal place for a celebration or gathering. There’s live music every Sunday, all year round, and the resident living art ‘Opera House-esque’ concrete compound – dubbed The Vault – is the perfect private space to gather for a swirl and sip of impeccable wines, and a casual or formal nibble.
You’ll be so at home at Leura Park that you’ll instantly feel as though you’re relaxing in your own backyard. Beautiful wine, tasty food and the stunning backdrop of a productive vineyard make it the perfect place for a lazy day of drinking and dining.
