Grampians Estate is home to one of the oldest vineyards in Victoria. With vines planted in 1878, there is a justified sense of romance that surrounds the time-honoured wine produced from these vines.
The Great Western Cellar Door and 137-year-old vineyard was taken over by Tom and Sarah Guthrie in 2009. With backgrounds in farming – Tom is a fourth generation farmer and Sarah grew up on a farm – the couple had previously planted grape vines at their home block in Willaura. The Mafeking vineyard was Tom and Sarah’s first venture into winemaking producing small volumes of shiraz and chardonnay. Their business began to expand when they purchased a share in the Great Western Cellar Door and Vineyard in 2004, before taking over full ownership five years later.
Grampians Estate is perhaps most famous for its cool-climate shiraz. As a fairly small region, Tom and Sarah’s ability to create great quality wines of this style has become one of their major selling points. Their portfolio includes a range of other varieties, including riesling, chardonnay, grenache, tempranillo and sparkling white and rose wines.
A young winemaker, Andrew Davey, heads the operation at Grampians Estate, but he is by no means inexperienced. Having worked at a number of wineries throughout Victoria, including Pyren Vineyard in the Pyrenees, Andrew is incredibly skilled in his craft and consistently produces wines of an extremely high quality.
Grampians Estate’s string of accolades can be attributed to both the great skill of Andrew and the care that the team takes with each wine. They predominantly use fruit from their own vines at the Mafeking and Great Western vineyards so they know quality will be high. All of the grapes are hand-picked; a process that is more expensive than using a machine but results in a better quality fruit – a sacrifice Tom said is worth the extra dollars.
Everything done at Grampians Estate is about maximising quality, which has led to the winery receiving a prestigious five red-star rating from James Halliday. The winery has also been awarded a number of trophies and medals in various wine competitions throughout the country. The April/May edition of 2016 Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine awarded the Grampians Estate Cellar Door the Star Cellar Door and Cellar Door with Best Food for the Grampians/Henty Region.
These award-winning wines are best tasted in the comfort of the architecturally designed Cellar Door, located on the Great Western vineyard. The building features a cathedral type ceiling and has a warm and friendly feel all year round with local produce, books about wine, glassware and a range of other gifts lining the walls. The Cellar Door offers up to 14 wines for tasting at any one time, all of which can be paired with a local cheese platter.
Grampians Estate is an award-winning winery that well and truly lives up to its praises. With a Cellar Door offering comfortable seating indoors and outdoors, staff who welcome you with open arms and a dedication to consistently producing wines of a high quality, a visit to this historical winery will not be forgotten.
