On the edge of a picture-perfect town, just a short lakeside stroll will take you to a dreamy country house.
It was this humble weatherboard cottage that owner, Lynda Gardener fell in love with, and you’re sure to be smitten too.
“As soon as we walked in, it just felt right,” Lynda said of the Federation-style house, established in 1902. She and her partner, Mark, bought the property on the spot and after three months of renovation, it was ready to welcome its first visitors. With her distinctive eye for styling and design, Lynda has transformed the property into an idyllic country escape, with two bedrooms and an original potato pickers shed, now converted into a third bedroom.
Her minimal-vintage aesthetic is a skill developed over 20 years as a stylist and design retailer at Empire Vintage and Gardener & Marks. While similar in tone to her previous projects, including the The White Room in Fitzroy and The White House in Daylesford, as well as her newest venture, The Apartment in St Kilda, The Estate has its own unique personality.
Lynda’s touch means that every detail of The Estate is simple and luxurious. Natural timber, white linen, rustic furniture and eccentric, beautiful vintage finds from Lynda’s collections create a relaxed space, imbued with character and the comfort of age – each piece has a story behind it.
Spend your mornings exploring the boutique shops and cafes of Trentham village, and your afternoons on the deck overlooking the gardens. Evenings
are best whiled away sprawled on one of the house’s wall-to-wall lounges, basking in the warmth of a crackling wood-fire, or relaxing in the clawfoot bath.
Open the double French doors and you’ll find yourself surrounded by the property’s own small orchard laden with apples and pears, and harvest gardens that provide visitors with fresh herbs throughout the year, and berries in the summer months. Forage for some thyme or rosemary to add to your meals, or snack on some raspberries straight off the vine. You’ll also stumble across olive trees, part of the Mediterranean garden, in the process of maturing towards bearing fruit.
Wander across the grounds and you’ll find the barn, renovated from a worker’s shed to a light-filled, impeccably styled community space. The barn plays host to intimate weddings and local workshops in crafts such as ceramics and floral arrangement. The events held in the barn reflect the bespoke nature of Lynda’s property, catering perfectly to those who share her deep love and respect for the beauty of the property.
Simple luxuries abound at The Estate Trentham – drinking wine by the fire, fingers stained from picking blackberries – a little country paradise that you’ll wish you never had to leave. Attention is paid to the smallest details – every element of vintage crockery, sumptuous textiles and aged timber furniture has been lovingly curated. It’s this care, warmth and authenticity that elevates The Estate Trentham to one of Victoria’s most beautiful country houses.
