The art of camping has had a glamorous makeover with Happy Glamper.
The Mornington Peninsula–based company creates a range of unique and casual camping experiences – known as glamping – by doing all the work for you, ensuring you can spend more time relaxing and less time packing up.
The unique concept is operated by Jessie and Scott Curtis-Griffiths. The couple met and fell in love at work more than 10 years ago, shortly after they decided to go into business together, buying a general store that had been operating for more than 40 years. Although the seven-day working week was initially a shock to a system, owning their own small business was a liberty they weren’t going to give up. After selling the store, they looked for something more creative and set up a photobooth business, which was sold a year later. The capital from the sale was used to import a vintage Airstream caravan from California.
The original plan was to rent out the Airstream, but considering one wasn’t enough to generate an income, and they were very expensive to import, Jessie and Scott started looking at other ways to introduce a luxury accommodation experience outdoors.
The dynamic duo were attracted to the idea of camping; they believe it disrupts the daily routine, shifts the focus back to the things that matter, and celebrates individualism, the nomadic life and sustainability. By introducing little luxuries back into the camping experience, they take the work out of pitching, styling and packing down, and ensure you can maintain every creature comfort – like sleeping in a cosy bed.
Operating all over the Mornington Peninsula, Happy Glamper can either come to you on a private property, or suggest a spot to set up shop. Depending on the experience you choose, they’ll tow the vintage Airstream to your camp site or pitch a deluxe canvas tent.
Once set up, they’ll prepare a fresh bed and give your living space a spruce with things like beautiful books and magazines, rugs, board games and chairs. When your glamping experience is over, the team will then return to pack up, meaning you literally don’t have to lift a finger.
There are four sleeping options to choose from: Peggy Sue, the original Airstream; a vintage caravan, named Miss Myrtle; or one of two canvas-tent styles: the Bell or Lotus Belle. The Bell Tents come in two sizes – the four-metre is ideal for couples, while the five-metre has a little more room for groups and families. The Lotus Belle offerings are the newest addition to the range, offering more standing room and loads of space for extra beds.
Best of all, Happy Glamper is also available for events, adding that special touch to corporate retreats, weddings, birthdays and private parties. For this, it has extended its reach all over Victoria, offering the Bell and Lotus Belle options to create a gorgeous tent village, with plenty of room for every guest.
Happy Glamper redefines the outdoor experience. Jessie and Scott have found the best of both worlds, balancing the embrace of the outdoors with the little luxuries that make a weekend away that much more relaxing. Forget nylon tents and sleeping bags: this is camping, but not as you know it.
