Mornington Peninsula Brewery, located in Mornington itself, is a craft brewery that is rapidly making a name for itself, picking up awards locally and nationally since it opened in 2010.
Whether sitting at the brewery bar enjoying a pizza and a pot, or buying a few bottles to enjoy at home, the strict commitment to quality means you are getting top-notch local beer with all the right stuff in it! Founding Shareholders Matt Bebe and Malcolm McLean credit Hawthorn’s Stuart Dew for starting Mornington Peninsula Brewery. It was his match-winning performance for the Hawks in the 2008 Premiership that brought the neighbours together to celebrate and to eventually discuss their visions for establishing a brewery. The following day, while Mal joined in the celebrations with fellow Hawks fans at the Glenferrie Oval, Matt set about writing a plan for the brewery. The connection with the “great game” doesn’t end there though.
Meetings with Rod Attenborough followed and the vision started to come together for a craft brewery that would remain true to the tradition, industry and honesty associated with Mornington Peninsula produce. Matt located a factory that would be perfect for the brewery and set about getting the necessary approvals, permits and agreements. Rod looked after the artwork and advertising and they decided on a logo derived from medieval alchemy meaning “drinkable gold”. Mal, meanwhile, gave his opinion on everything!
An IBS brewery system was installed and 16 like-minded beer lovers took a share in the company and helped set up the brewery. Things were getting serious as opening day approached and Matt quit his position with a Biotech company to focus on managing the brewery full time. Finally, after all the hard work, Mornington Peninsula Brewery opened on AFL Grand Final Day in September 2010!
Set in the industrial area of Mornington, the brewery looks from the outside like a regular industrial building. Indeed, it used to be a golf-ball factory. Step inside and you soon realise it is a whole new world, with its distinctive large stainless steel tanks and its fine bar and dining area.
The Brewery Bar is open from Thursday to Sunday with live blues, soul and jazz music each Sunday. It is also available for private functions. As well as its on-tap beers, the bar boasts wood-fired pizzas and local wines. The outside beer garden and mezzanine overlooking the Brewhouse are ideal places to enjoy a beer or two.
The brewery also supplies venues throughout the Peninsula, Victoria and Australia, as well as offering retail sales in bottles. Life revolves around consistently producing its pale ale, witbier, brown ale and IPA. Head brewer is Andrew Gow, who is highly regarded within the industry after spending time as a brewer with Mountain Goat, Matilda Bay and 5 Islands. Every four to six weeks, Andrew produces a specialty beer that varies depending on new beer styles and the season. This beer is very well regarded throughout Victoria.
The Mornington Peninsula Brewery has a simple philosophy when it comes to their produce: “Be true to the beer and those who drink it…” ensuring that all beers are produced using the finest malt, hops, water and other ingredients.
The key values of industry, honesty and tradition mean that the brewery never compromises on quality. So far this has served it very well.
