When it opened a quarter of a century ago Lindenderry at Red Hill blazed a trail that hundreds, if not thousands, have eagerly followed since.
According to owners Jan and Peter Clark, the introduction of a country house hotel in a destination brimming with delicious food and wine was a concept only the Europeans had truly mastered in the early 1990s.
It was on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula that they stumbled upon their utopia, framed by establishing gum trees, and nestled in with the orchards, gardens and vines of Red Hill. And so, Lindenderry was born.
The boutique accommodation and restaurant was the first of its kind on the Peninsula, offering the ‘perfect country house, only staffed’. Today, 25 years later, the property continues to treat its guests with sumptuous fare, luxury lodgings and intimate spaces.
The Dining Room, the property’s signature restaurant, delights its guests with an innovative seasonal menu that showcases local produce paired with views overlooking the estate’s working vineyard – it’s an intimate setting perfect for any occasion.
The Dining Room prides itself on supporting and featuring a range of local produce, and maintains a kitchen garden, as well as relationships with boutique producers along the peninsula including Main Ridge Dairy, Sunny Ridge Strawberry Farm and Pure Peninsula Honey.
You don’t need to be staying at Lindenderry to relish its culinary artwork. All are welcome for lunch and dinner to sample some of the best Mornington has to offer. An emphasis on seasonality means dishes are bound to change, but to start, you may find yourself choosing between the yellow fin tuna with sea urchin, crispy chicken skin, avocado puree, yuzu dressing and mazuna, or the smoked venison carpaccio with blackberries, fried enoki, burnt leek and savoury.
For mains, you’ll find local proteins on full display: autumn flavours might bring skirt steak with black garlic, seared witlof, crisp kahl, charred baby corn and black volcanic salt, while spring produce results in dishes like Tarwin Lower lamb back strap with river mint croquette, baby cucumber, spring peas, Main Ridge chevre and salad burnet.
Finish dinner with a selection of cheeses from nearby Main Ridge, or opt for a sweeter option with the Local Strawberries and Cream – strawberry ice cream, frangipani and strawberry juice.
Cap the experience off with a glass – or bottle – of wine from Lindenderry’s expansive collection. A three-hectare vineyard on-site allows Winemaker, Barney Flanders, to produce a number of award-winning drops, which are complemented on the wine list by a range of prestigious local and international estate wines.
Ranked as one of the top ten Australian hotels, Lindenderry is the ultimate escape from the everyday. With luxury accommodation, a prestigious restaurant and stunning views, it’s the perfect place to stay, sample and sip the weekend away.
