Rohan Peters and Mike Basset were destined to do great things together. Born two weeks apart in the same hospital, they became close friends by the age of four. Many years later, they travelled throughout Europe, working in bars and pubs and tasting the various lagers, ales and ciders on offer.

The cider and beer in Europe was very different from what they were used to in Australia – but the boys loved it. When they returned home, they tried to seek out a local equivalent but their efforts were fruitless.

The idea of a European-style cider with a local twist kept brewing in the back of their minds. When a run-down wool shed in Coldstream became available, Rohan and Mike knew that this was their chance. They restored and transformed the building, creating a modern microbrewery in Coldstream – the gateway to the Yarra Valley. Although it was slow to get everything up and running, three years later Rohan and Mike released their rst batch of apple cider. Their range continues to grow, and today includes apple and pear cider alongside a Czech pilsner, pale ale, original ale and grand porter beer.

Their idyllic location ensures a passion for local produce – Coldstream Brewery exclusively uses Victorian apples in its cider. Fresh apples are crushed using a traditional rack and cloth cider press before undergoing a cold ferment to create a light, fruity fizz. These traditional brewing methods set Coldstream Brewery apart from other brewers in Australia.

The brewery-bar-restaurant is open to the public year round, so tasting the fruits of their labour is easier than ever. If you’re interested in trying a bit of everything then the tasting paddle is the way to go. You’ll get a taste of the entire on-tap range and learn a little bit about what makes each brew special. Once you’ve sampled them all make sure you go back for a pint of your favourite.

When your stomach starts to rumble the food offerings won’t disappoint. As with the drinks, the theme is pub fare with a gourmet twist. Start with one of the famous sharing platters of charcuterie or cheese boards.

Mains bring some pub favourites including a classic parma and a hearty porterhouse steak. But when you’re at a brewery it’s hard to go past the traditional beer-battered fish and chips. The batter is made from Coldstream Brewery’s own Czech pilsner for a light and crispy shell with slightly hoppy notes. There is also a selection of pizzas to choose from, with everything from traditional capricciosa to something more gourmet. As with the cider, all produce is sourced from the abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables available throughout the Yarra Valley.

Coldstream Brewery is the perfect spot to stop and relax with friends, and on a nice day you can sit out in the courtyard surrounded by sun flowers and climbing hops vines. This gateway to one of Australia’s favourite wine regions is the perfect start, or end, to your journey through the Yarra Valley.
