At 2 Macs Farm, you will gain an insight into what paddock to plate truly means. The talented couple behind the working farm sells a range of fresh produce grown and made on the grounds. They also offer a number of experiences to entertain and educate locals, visitors and everyone in between.
The passionate couple, Mary McCarthy and Bill McNamara – the two Macs – started the farm as a result of their love for the rural lifestyle and lifelong interests in organic food production, sustainability and healthy living. Mary has a background in cooking and catering, which began with the establishment of a gourmet takeaway and catering outlet in Portsea many years ago, which now operates from the farm. Mary has not only run her own restaurant but has also consulted in recipe design and operated an organic food manufacturing business. She recently returned to study to expand her knowledge in nutrition and health mentoring.
Bill’s expertise comes in handy with regards to the hands-on tasks at the farm. A master builder by profession, Bill grew up on a market garden on the outskirts of Melbourne and so is truly at home on the farm. Examples of his handiwork are evident in every corner, from the renovated buildings on-site to the freshly ploughed paddocks and well-tended bees.
The farmgate at 2 Macs Farm offers a range of the produce grown and harvested on-site. This includes raw honey sourced from the farm’s beehives, which are tended to by Bill himself. The honey is of very high quality and is extracted from the hives in small batches, without applying external heat, allowing the honey to retain its active healthy ingredients and maximise the health properties.
Everything available at the farm is seasonal, but you might be lucky enough to grab some organic garlic grown in the paddocks. There is also a selection of delicious chutneys and relishes available year-round, made from the fresh fruit and vegetables grown on-site.
Mary also holds regular cooking classes, workshops and lunches on the property in the Harvest Kitchen. Previously an old machinery shed, Bill has transformed this space into a large, light and inviting room. Mary holds classes here on a range of topics with a particular emphasis on seasonal eating, back-to-basics cooking, and making food for healthy living. Her fortnightly Sunday lunches are low-key and relaxed, showcasing the range of produce grown at the property.
For those who can’t bear to leave the farm at the end of the day, 2 Macs also offers B&B style accommodation in two houses on the property – Bee Keepers Cottage and Harvest House. Almost everything in the self-sufficient houses, down to the beeswax soap found in the bathrooms, is handmade at 2 Macs Farm.
2 Macs farm is a multifaceted working farm offering fresh produce, artisan goods and activities for guests from near and far. Whether it’s a cooking class on the forgotten art of breadmaking, a stay in the charming and comfortable Harvest House, or a quick trip to stock up on the delicious raw honey, the team will ensure each visit to 2 Macs is a memorable one.
