Webster’s Market & Cafe
61 Webster St, Ballarat, Victoria, Australia

Sitting pretty on Ballarat’s historic Webster Street, Webster’s Market and Cafe is a slice of caffeinated paradise in country Victoria. With a charmingly renovated heritage cornerstore as the backdrop, Webster’s offers expertly brewed coffee alongside gourmet brunch delights.
Jane and Felipe Meneses Lopez are both chefs with a serious passion for coffee, so it’s little surprise that the space is equal parts cafe, eatery and takeaway gourmet produce store. When it came to selecting the beans for Webster’s they turned to Fitzroy- based roaster, Industry Beans. Not only does Industry Beans have a strong connection to Ballarat – it was started by two local boys, Steve and Trevor Simmonds – but as the supplier, the team also provides ongoing support to Webster’s.
The house blend is Fitzroy Street, which is comprised of beans from three single origins, El Salvador, Indonesia and Colombia. To ensure a consistent brew, the beans are cupped and roasted seasonally to achieve a characteristically smooth, sweet and balanced flavour profile. Head Barista, Minty Beel, brings a whole host of Melbourne specialty coffee experience to the country table, having worked for Small Batch Roasting Co., Code Black Coffee and Padre Coffee.
In addition to a perfectly brewed espresso, milk-based or cold-drip coffee, Webster’s also offers gold mesh coffee, which uses a gold-plated ‘mesh’ filter to obtain a cleaner brew than its stainless steel counterpart. It also happens to help minimise the wastage associated with using paper filters.
Open early morning to late afternoon with an all-day brunch menu, each dish on offer is an ode to the simplicity of local Victorian produce. Tuck into the chicken and black pudding terrine with grilled nectarines on toast; eggs benedict with pulled ham hock and hollandaise; a seasonal cheese plate or a selection of colourful salads. There’s also a gourmet sandwich selection available from lunchtime onwards during the week.
Best of all, if you fall in love with what’s on your plate, Webster’s gourmet providore means you can take all the ingredients home with you. You’ll find a range of local meats, cheese and other smallgoods, as well as picnic packs and breakfast boxes available for pre-order.
Retaining its original cornerstore shopfront and general structure, Webster’s is inviting and warm, with dark polished timbers and matte black finishes. Inside, exposed brick walls and hanging gold light fittings keep things modern and fresh, while the outside courtyard offers a way to soak up the sunshine on hot days.
Sometimes, you just want a good cup of coffee without the crowds or fuss. For city-quality coffee in a relaxed country environment, Webster’s Market & Cafe is pretty hard to beat.
