The Pickers Union inhabits a cool, industrial space at the back of the Geelong Vintage Market, where specialty coffee and unique brunch meet a fun,
modern aesthetic.

The owners of the North Geelong cafe, Sev and Bek Lah, haven’t always worked in hospitality. A carpenter and disability worker respectively, the couple has long shared a love of good coffee and food. In 2013, after years of chatting and brainstorming about what their dream cafe would be like, Sev and Bek opened The Pickers Union.

Coffee is sourced from Cartel Coffee Roasters, which has a great reputation for finding and roasting some of the best beans in the world. The Drummer Boy house blend is a selection of the highest quality, seasonal coffee, which may vary from week to week. It’s a full-bodied, well spiced combination of beans from Colombia, Ethiopia and Burundi.

The excellent espresso can be largely attributed to barista Jess Gooley, who has always had a keen attention to detail. Honing her skills in the roastery at Coffee Cartel, she now shows off her skills behind The Pickers Union’s coffee machine, which was handcrafted in the Netherlands.

As well as espresso and milk coffees, you can get your hands on cold drip, batch brew and filter coffee. The Pickers Union also offers a variety of single origin beans to spoil their customers, hailing from the likes of Ethiopia, Burundi, Colombia, Indonesia and India.

To eat, there are a variety of breakfast-worthy options, such as the dragonfruit smoothie bowl or the Dr Martys crumpet served with lavender labne, bee pollen, hazelnut granola and lemon curd. The super hungry should go straight for the Pick of the Bunch – a finger-licking update on a big breakfast, complete with poached eggs, field mushrooms, buttered spinach, chorizo, bacon and Meredith goat’s cheese.

For ‘Something a little more Lunchy’, opt for the okonomiyaki, a Japanese-style pancake served with pulled pork, bean shoots, Asian herbs, Kewpie mayo, bonito flakes and Japanese BBQ sauce; or perhaps the beef brisket burger, which boasts brisket that is braised overnight, crumbed then fried, served with American cheddar, chipotle slaw and dill cucumbers on an activated charcoal bun. There’s also a tempting selection of baked sweets, including the infamous Bistro Morgan donuts.

Featuring fresh pink and white walls, pale timber seating and pops of gold throughout, The Pickers Union is the ideal refuge from an afternoon of oft-dusty op shopping.

With a diverse clientele spanning tradies, locals and market-goers alike, this is a true North Geelong treasure, where anyone and everyone can enjoy great coffee and brunch, any day of the week.
