Until recently, a trip down the Great Ocean Road to Aireys Inlet included picturesque scenery, beautiful beaches and an acknowledgment that a good cup of coffee would have to wait. Fortunately for coffee aficionados, the latter is no longer a concern, thanks to Onda Food House.
Following years of work in the hectic Melbourne hospitality scene and after meeting chef Pietro Paci, Carli Setchell was drawn back to her hometown. With knowledge and appreciation of what makes a good cup of coffee, the pair set out to create a sanctuary of their own. And what a beautiful place it is!
Onda is situated in a quintessential coastal setting, along the river and just a stone’s throw away from the famous Aireys Inlet Lighthouse. Take a seat and keep an eye out for kangaroos, birds and other native animals.
The building itself is brand new and pays homage to its beautiful coastal location. The interior is contemporary and minimal; white walls, polished concrete floors and wooden trimmings fill the space between the vast floor-to-ceiling windows. These design elements aren’t by chance: the minimalist look allows guests to fully appreciate their surroundings – whether that be the view outside or the delicious treats on the counter.
Carli’s sister, Alana Setchell, is a seasoned barista, having worked with Allpress blends before joining her sister at Onda. Loyal to her old workplace, she swears by the Allpress Supremo blend and its sweet, bold flavours. You’ll be able to taste hints of red berries and cocoa in an espresso, or mix it up with the range of milks (and mylks) on offer.
In keeping their offering as plant-based as possible, Onda is dedicated to using fresh, seasonal produce to create delicious and wholesome food. Alana’s partner, Josh Walker, joins Pietro in the kitchen, and together the pair have created a beautiful seasonal menu that caters to all of your foodie inclinations, whether they be vegetarian, vegan or meat-loving.
Grab homemade granola if you’re in a rush or sit down to enjoy one of the colourful salads. Need something a little heartier? Order the black bean burger or the incredibly popular tofu scramble. Before you ask for the bill, be sure to take a look at the front cabinet, where an array of raw and vegan desserts await.
There’s really nothing better than a weekend escape from the city. With such great coffee and healthy fare on offer at Onda Food House, there’s nothing stopping you from hitting the road.
