Located in an industrial barn between Kyneton and Castlemaine, Moto Bean Coffee Roasters is bringing specialty coffee back to the Macedon Ranges, one carefully roasted cup at a time.

The passionate pair behind the project is husband and wife, Laura and Lachy Evans. Making the move in 2014 from Melbourne to Malmsbury, they packed their love of coffee in their suitcases. As regulars of some of Melbourne’s best coffee haunts and keen participants in the coffee industry, Laura and Lachy were more than qualified to open their own cafe and roastery.

For Lachy and Laura, Moto Bean is all about coffee and motorbikes, rebooting the classic cafe-racer culture. Ideally situated next to the Malmsbury Botanic Garden and lake on the Old Calder Highway, and with a deck overlooking the garden and a fireplace inside, Moto Bean is an all-year kind of place. Classic motorcycles dot the space, paying homage to the car clubs and motorcycle crews that cruise the Old Calder Highway.

Lachy is Head Roaster and responsible for coffee sourcing and buying. is commitment to overseeing the entire coffee-making process also sees him working behind the machine with his team of experienced baristas. He works with a number of suppliers to source the best product and has developed great working relationships with Bennetts, FTA Coffee and Melbourne Coffee Merchants, all of whom operate ethically and sustainably.

The house blend is the simply named Seasonal Blend, and was awarded Bronze in the Australian International Coffee Awards 2015 and Silver in 2016. It changes two to three times a year based on the team’s picks of the most recent harvest and features beans from all over the world; although Lachy does have a particular obsession with Central and South American beans.

In their quest for the perfect cup, Lachy and his team also experiment with different brewing methods, including cold brew, V60 pour over and batch brew filter. They hold their own cuppings at various cafes in the region every month and host an annual ‘Let’s Talk Coffee in the Daylesford Macedon Ranges’ night, which the team said has created a “dialogue and collaboration between local roaster, baristas and cafe owners”.

The pair’s commitment to their rural community extends beyond coffee as well. Reflecting their love of classic cars and motorcycles, Lachy and Laura collaborated with the CFA in launching the Malmsbury Classic Show & Shine event to raise funds for a new truck.

With a region full of quality local produce and their very own kitchen garden grown right on the cafe’s doorstep, it isn’t hard to source tasty ingredients for the Melbourne-inspired food menu. Stop by for the buttermilk hotcakes with vanilla mascarpone, fresh berries, pistachio floss and maple syrup, or the V6 Veggie brekky, featuring grilled field mushrooms atop a crunchy rosti with truffle oil.

Lachy and Laura’s philosophy is to bring great food and serious coffee to the Macedon Ranges: there’s never been a better reason to leave the city hustle behind and go for a cruise.
