There’s something special about Kilcunda General Store. Maybe it’s the breathtaking ocean view or the excellent coffee, or maybe it’s just the passion emanating from the owners. Whatever it is, you can rest assured that a visit here will be well worth the trip.
Kilcunda General Store is situated on an iconic stretch of land, directly across from the ocean. At just 30 minutes from Phillip Island, the town is an incredibly popular destination for beach goers, surfers and day-trippers from Melbourne, as well as locals popping in for their daily coffee fix.
The buzzing cafe/shop/post office is owned and operated by hospitality expert, Mindy Grumley and her ‘right hand woman’ Carol Carrington. They both have a strong passion for food and its origins and a genuine love of cooking for friends and family.
Mindy’s career spans work in a number of kitchens and various catering and freelance cooking opportunities. Just one of these was the establishment of a successful cafe in Gippsland, where Carol was the barista. Many years later, when Mindy stumbled across the site for an old general store, the pair came together once again.
The two have combined their mutual love of the industry and infused it into the warm and welcoming venue, located on the picturesque South Gippsland coastline. Employing a team of warm-hearted, passionate individuals, KGS serves the best in local produce and quality coffee.
Mindy and Carol aim to break the assumption that you can’t find good coffee in a small town. Their beans are sourced from Melbourne roasters, Gravity Espresso, which regularly provides training and workshops to KGS staff.
The house blend, Zenith, is a medium roast with a strong flavour and pleasant caramel notes. Its complexity and smooth aftertaste means it is well suited to both espresso and milk-based coffee, making it a great all-rounder.
For those wishing to expand their horizons, there is always a selection of guest single origins on offer, which are also available for purchase at the adjoining produce store, udder & hoe. Here, Rachel Russo and Mindy celebrate a philosophy that most from the region would both understand and appreciate: traditional and organic produce that’s of the highest quality.
Similarly, Mindy and Carol have spent years fostering relationships with many local producers and strive to showcase this produce throughout the menu. The talented chefs execute a menu of simple, rustic and on-trend fare, with something to appeal to all. Changing specials also appear, depending on what’s fresh and seasonal in the region.
Kilcunda General Store is a coastal treasure. The multi-faceted space offers great food, excellent coffee and million-dollar views to all who stop by, sharing a little small-town hospitality with visitors along the way.
