Green Olive at Red Hill truly is a family affair. Greg and Sue O’Donoghue run this place with the help of the whole family – including three kelpies, a maremma, 40 sheep, 60 chooks and a smattering of Indian Runner ducks.

It’s no easy feat, considering the variety of experiences on hand. The 27-acre farm, nestled in the wine-growing region of the Peninsula Hinterlands, is not only home to a produce-plentiful farm, but a restaurant and cooking school too.

Growing up in the country, Greg and Sue have combined their childhood experiences with their hard-won tertiary qualifications to create a beautiful success story. Now joined by their children Sam and Sophie, they produce some of the Peninsula’s best produce for visitors to savour, including olives, grapes, herbs, veggies and eggs.

Green Olive is all about great food – the stuff that truly nurtures your heart and soul. From the moment you enter the property, you are immersed in a beautiful, and edible landscape. As you enter through the driveway, you’ll be greeted by 13-year-old olive trees and grazing sheep in the grove.

The farm’s rich volcanic soils, cool climate and between-the-bays location is an ideal place for growing quality produce and wine. The tasty olives are picked in late May for use in oils and tapas, and lemons are harvested in season before being transformed into cordial and lemon salt. Take a seat in the lush kitchen garden, with picturesque views over the vineyard, garden and dam before se ling in to sample the produce.

Greg and Sue oversee the restaurant so they can personally ensure that every customer has a great dining experience. It’s as hands-on as you can get, with the chefs in the garden picking the herbs and vegetables fresh every morning. They also roast their own coffee and raise their own sheep and chooks, turning all of this into premium quality, seasonal produce that people can try and buy at the Farm Shop. Whatever can’t be grown on-site is sourced from like-minded neighbours and farms.

The food is served as tapas, showcasing the best of Green Olive’s produce. Sample the olives and olive oil, handmade lamb sausages, free-range egg frittatas and dips made with garden-fresh herbs and veggies. All dishes are perfectly complemented by the family’s wine label, Kelpie Bridge, which is made from cool-climate grapes grown on the property.

Greg and Sue are proud of what they’ve achieved, and they love to show it off. There’s a wide range of experiences such as cooking classes, farm tours and farmgate produce tastings available too. On a visit to the Farm Shop, guests can enjoy complimentary tastings of the farm-grown olives, olive oils and relishes – and purchase some to take home too.
