Many great ideas are formed over a bottle of red, but rarely do these come to fruition. But a simple glass of wine was all it took for Lauren Sault and her brothers, Travis and Reece Beckley, to envision a concept that would soon become a reality. The trio joined forces with their families, starting up a catering business with a vision to one day open a brick and mortar store. Six months later, Bear & Bean opened.

The name is a combination of the ‘bare’ and natural food they serve, and bean, of course, represents their love for coffee. With a tough decision at hand when it came to selecting a supplier, the team turned to dc Specialty Coffee Roasters for their strong flavours and punchy aromas.

The house blend, Monsoon, is a mix of Monsoon Malabar AA, Guatemala San Antonio and Nicaragua Luis Belletaz beans, with low acidity and a medium-full body. The flavour is a deep dry cocoa and rich toffee, with a hint of orange and mandarin zest. A new single origin is also on offer every few weeks, rotating depending on the season.

Head Barista, Jack Glassborrow, has been making coffee since he was 17 years old and has a knack for latte art. With the charisma and skill of remembering customers and their orders, he’ll always serve you your favourite brew with a smile and a chat.

The welcoming space offers a fresh and healthy menu with vegan, paleo, and gluten free meal options, as well as a focus on local produce. For breakfast try Adelia’s cranberry and macadamia granola with natural yoghurt and fresh fruit, drizzled with honey, or the ‘mushies’ on toast with La Madre sourdough and Meredith goat’s cheese.

If it’s lunch you’re after, tuck into a gourmet sausage roll with Bear and Bean homemade relish, which can also be made FODMAP-friendly with a side of homemade Dijon mustard. Spicy pulled pork tacos, and a Middle Eastern tabouli and roasted cauliflower salad round out the range of options.

To quench your thirst with something other than coffee, Bear & Bean also offers tea by T Totaler, organic juices and soft drinks, indulgent milkshakes and superfood smoothies.

The hard-to-find haunt is tucked into the Little Ryrie Street carpark, only found by those in the know. A graffiti-art mural signals the front door and once inside you’ll be greeted by an airy, warehouse-like space. If you look up into the lofty ceiling, hundreds of white-lined pictures and quotes form a feature installation drawn by the owners. The courtyard area out the back is also perfect for those warm summer days.

The essence of the original catering company still influences the cafe, which is closed on weekends for private hire and functions. Their signature work-of-art cheeseboards are highly sought after and can be ordered for any event on- or off-site. Pop in on a Friday night to indulge in a board and a glass of wine, – you might find yourself dreaming up your own cafe.
