There’s nothing better than settling in for a glass of wine and instantly feeling right at home. At WayWood Wines it is impossible not to feel this way, with the Cellar Door quite literally inside Andrew Wood and Lisa Robertson’s living room.
UK native Andrew started his hospitality career in London as a restaurant manager and sommelier before returning to university to study winemaking. Following a run of vintages in the UK, Portugal and Italy, he migrated to Australia to work the wineries of the Granite Belt in Queensland. In 1996 he met Lisa, his pharmacist-at-trade, but culinary-creative-at-heart, life partner. A few years later they went searching for the perfect place to create the wine styles they had enjoyed in their European travels, plus those they had dreamt about. In 2004, they decided to call McLaren Vale home.
When their first-choice property purchase fell through, Andrew and Lisa began looking for an alternative site. During this time they came up with the idea of incorporating wayward into their new venture – a play on Andrew’s last name and his nature, and an accurate representation of their dream of offering alternative wine varieties. From that moment, WayWood Wines was born.
Opening the Waywood Wines Cellar Door in 2014, the pair allows visitors to sample a number of interesting varietals in a welcoming and light-filled space. A visit here isn’t complete without sampling the delicious food at Luscious Red Kitchen. Inspired by Lisa’s initials and her personality, Luscious Red presents guests with a gamut of dishes that innovatively use seasonal, local produce to match a particular wine style.
The various series of wine reflect pivotal moments and points in Andrew and Lisa’s lives. The Quattro series is an introductory tier of a red, white, sparkling and rosé and designed for a lifestyle of easy drinking with good food and friends. The Quattro blends are a tribute to living life to the full, exploring new boundaries and techniques, and visiting the edge of convention.
The Varietal collection more closely reflects the McLaren Vale region, showcasing its ability to produce varietal definition and integrity. The range includes old favourites shiraz and cabernet sauvignon, many of which boast a host of awards. However, Andrew and Lisa’s real focus is giving guests a chance to try something a little different, with their sangiovese, nebbiolo, tempranillo and montepulciano also getting the critics talking.
The final collection is the Reserve wines, appropriately named the WayWood Years. The trio of wines are a testament to the best of the best. The ‘96’ Shiraz pays tribute to the Aussie hero, the ‘97’ Shiraz Cabernet blend is a nod towards mateship and Australian tradition and the ‘98’ Nebbiolo follows the alternative trend WayWood is known for, offering connoisseurs a new and bold drop.
So take a seat inside or relax out on the verandah and enjoy the best of the McLaren Vale. Andrew and Lisa will also be offering luxury accommodation on a recently acquired property for the full McLaren Vale experience.
