Sitting off the road from which it originally took its name, Lobethal Road Wines is a small family-owned winery that has quietly established a reputation for premium, cool-climate wines.

Dave Neyle and Inga Lidums planted the first vines on the property in 1998. Having developed and managed vineyards across Australia, the venture was built on Dave’s experience in viticulture while also putting Inga’s background in marketing and design to good use.

Lobethal Road has gained a name for high-quality wines across its entire range, which includes chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, pinot gris, roussanne, shiraz, tempranillo, graciano, pinot noir, and its Maja methode traditionelle sparkling.

Nestled at the base of Mount Torrens, the northeast-facing site sits at 475 metres above sea level. The soil is free draining sandy loam over red clay with underlying quartzite and ironstone.

The vineyard’s aspect is perfect for cool climate shiraz and chardonnay, reflected in the host of trophies Lobethal Road has collected over recent years including best shiraz, best red and best wine in show at the Sydney Royal Show 2014.

Embracing a sustainable approach to viticulture, both the Cellar Door and residence run on solar energy and there is minimal intervention in the vineyard and winery, allowing the terroir, vintage and distinctive fruit flavours to express themselves.

Harvest usually starts in February and runs through to April, with grapes for sparkling picked first. The aromatic whites, pinot gris and sauvignon blanc follow, then the chardonnay. Reds are next, finally finishing with another white, roussanne.

As the first wine made and the most-awarded, shiraz is arguably Lobethal Road’s flagship. Rich berry fruits with signature pepper and spice notes combine with a savoury finish of depth and complexity. Fine tannins and subtle use of French oak result in an elegant cool-climate shiraz that is very food friendly. The peppery spiciness of the wine marries well with spicy aromatic flavours, as well as duck, chargrilled meats, robust ragouts, cheese and even chocolate.

Lobethal Road’s whites are also very popular, in particular the Bacchant Chardonnay, having won trophies for best chardonnay and best wine in show in the 2013 Adelaide Hills Wine Show. Hand picked, the grapes are whole bunch pressed into new and two-year old French barriques and left to wild ferment. It delivers a sophisticated nose with a complex palate of white peach, citrus and biscuit cream tones.

Lobethal Road’s entire range is available for tasting at the mud-brick Cellar Door. Enjoy a glass of wine by the open fire during winter, or in the pretty courtyard garden overlooking the vineyard in warmer months. Seasonal platters featuring regional produce are available to share, a perfect accompaniment to the range of tipples on offer.
