Life in the Barossa is an epicurean delight of artisan food and hand- crafted wines, enjoyed in the company of friends. 1847 Wines & Chateau Yaldara provide the perfect meeting place for family and friends to come together to taste the essence of this unique region.
The origins of 1847 Winery begin with the Bauer family. These early Barossa settlers were granted the title to their Rowland Flat property by the South Australian Governor in 1847. This historic property is the site of one of the region’s first commercial vineyard plantings and wineries, dating back over a century. To this day, the Bauer’s Barossa property remains at the heart of 1847 Wines’ estate vineyards. 1847 Wines has now grown to encompass 80 hectares (200 acres) of estate vineyards on the diverse soils of the Rowland Flat sub-region, which are the source of the majority of the vintner’s premium wine portfolio.
Situated just outside the southern Barossa township of Lyndoch, the iconic Chateau Yaldara was founded in 1947 by Hermann Thumm after he migrated to Australia from Europe. He named it “Yaldara” after a local aboriginal word meaning “sparkling”, which refers to the North Para river that runs through the property. Today, estate grown, hand-crafted wines, locally produced artisan foods and a truly Barossan visitor experience keep Hermann’s vision alive.
Inspired by the Barossa’s pioneering spirit and produced with the philosophy that “great wine begins in the vineyard”, only the highest quality grapes are planted on this prime Barossa land. Varieties include regional classics chardonnay, semillon, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot and grenache.
The 1847 Yaldara winemakers draw inspiration from the great terroirs of the world and strive to produce wines that capture provenance in every bottle. Encompassing a small and unique area noted for the vivid red colour and high granitic content of its soils, and enjoying a Mediterranean climate characterised by cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers, the vines naturally produce fruit with great intensity and purity of flavour.
At 1847 Yaldara, each parcel of fruit is handled individually so its inherent potential can be realised. Only the gentlest techniques are employed, with best practice viticulture ensuring a legacy of sustainability and longevity for generations to come.
The flagship 1847 First Pick Shiraz is crafted from mature dry grown vineyards, with some of the oldest vines approaching 100 years of productive life. The low yielding vineyards in the southern Barossa region are hand picked and then gently destemmed into small batch open fermenters, where the must is hand plunged twice daily to extract colour, flavour and tannin. The wine is left on skins for six days before being gently basket pressed. This wine is matured in fine grained French oak barriques for 24 months prior to bottling.
Chateau Yaldara’s beautiful riverside restaurant offers relaxed all-day dining, award winning wines and gourmet local food. Alternatively, you can enjoy a platter of regional produce including gourmet cheeses, cured meats, olives and small goods in the Chateau’s Wine Room or while relaxing on lush green lawns that surround the Chateau.
