Wanera wine bar has a history more complex than most. Past occupants have included a store, telegraph office, newsagent, boarding house, sweet shop, dry cleaners, real estate office, coffee house, bake house and guesthouse. The most recent reincarnation – that looks set to stay – is as a wine bar and restaurant that fuses elements of a smart bistro, lively wine bar and casual coffee stop.
Run by the Plush family and managed by their daughter Jasmine, it offers visitors quality fine dining and a sophisticated wine bar in a venue that still possesses its original interior stone walls, along with exposed timber beams and restored floorboards. With a number of different entertaining areas, including a mezzanine perfect for large groups, the main dining room, an outdoor alfresco area and chairs by the fireplace, it has something for everyone and every occasion.
Zoe Westell is the woman in charge of the kitchen. Prior to Wanera, she spent time working in some of Adelaide’s best restaurants, including the last three years running the kitchen of an artisan bakery. She has now returned to a restaurant kitchen, settling into the beautiful Barossa Valley.
Open for all three main meals, the menu has a strong focus on regional suppliers, with the aim of showcasing Barossa’s produce. Zoe embraces the philosophy of using good quality local produce, heading to the farmers’ market to collect direct from the growers ingredients, with her favourite suppliers including Hutton Vale Lamb, Schultz’s small goods and Barossa Valley Cheese Co.
If you are visiting earlier in the day, there’s a comprehensive breakfast menu ready and waiting. Choose between naughty or nice beverages, with a range of morning cocktails and smoothies sure to quench anyone’s thirst. Move onto the fuel for the day, with dishes including a three-cheese omelette, served with Apex toast and Zimmy’s relish and waffles with maple syrup and double cream.
Find a comfortable spot to settle in for a night of indulgent eating. Start with beef carpaccio with Schultz’s bacon, potato, herbs and leaves, before moving onto a choice of entrées, including king prawns or halloumi with eggplant purée and a fennel salad.
For the mains, try the chargrilled 200g eye fillet with crushed kipfler potatoes, caramelised onion, anchovy butter and jus, or the roasted pork belly with celeriac purée and winter vegetable remoulade. Don’t forget to leave room for dessert: options include cappuccino crème brûlée served with housemade icecream; chocolate semifreddo with salted caramel, pretzel crumb or the malt pannacotta with peanut and candied popcorn.
The extensive wine and beverage list focuses on boutique wine producers, mainly from the Barossa Valley, providing an avenue for smaller vineyards to showcase their products. It also features a long line of craft beers from the state.
Whatever the time of day, the occasion or the hunger levels, Wanera Wine Bar is the ideal spot to sit back, relax and sample the best the Barossa has to offer.
