At Swinging Bridge Wines a talented team of winemakers produce red, white and sparkling wine from some of the best vineyards in Orange. Together they showcase the premium altitude and soil of the region, illustrating the potential of Orange as a world-class wine region.
Swinging Bridge Wines is owned by husband and wife duo, Tom and Georgie Ward, who took over operations in 2008. As Head Winemaker, Tom boasts degrees in commerce and winemaking, as well as time working in America, Europe, the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale, before moving back home to take up a managerial position at Jarretts of Orange. Here, Tom gained experience with different varieties of grape and learnt about the how the climate can affect a wine.
While this is Georgie’s first venture into the wine world, she has an extensive background in farming and agribusiness – her impressive resume includes a graduate position at Westpac Bank where she helped develop the Wheat Harvest Loan.
Tom and Georgie have approached Swinging Bridge Wines with a fresh perspective – although they stuck with the original name, which comes from the suspension walking bridge located at the foot of the original property in Canowindra.
Across the two vineyards, Swinging Bridge Wines produces a selection of chardonnay, pinot noir, sauvignon blanc, pinot gris, shiraz and blanc de blanc.
The Canowindra vineyard was planted in 1995 and boasts well draining clay loam soils. The differing slopes allow differences in grape, which make for interesting and unique blends and results in extremely well balanced wines.
In contrast, the Orange vineyard sits at around 900 metres in elevation, making it one of the highest in Australia. This elevation offers the vines a long, cool ripening period that results in a great flavour intensity and natural acidity.
Of the premium quality wines, the flagship drop is the cool-climate Reserve Chardonnay. The grapes used to make this drop were harvested in the cool of the night to retain freshness. During the fermentation process, the wine was matured in a tightly grained French oak for nine months, resulting in a subtle integrated oak aroma on opening of the bottle. This elegant drop is complex and attractive, with a host of white peach and stone fruit flavours noticeable on the palate. You’ll be able to find it, along with the full range of Swinging Bridge Wines, on the Swinging Bridge website, where they are available to purchase.
Tom and Georgie Ward have transformed Swinging Bridge Wines into the business it is today, making some of the most complex and elegant wines in the region. Each and every wine in the range tells a story of the climatic conditions in which it was grown and celebrates the true potential of Orange as a winemaking region.
